Not a bad move, for either side. Little if any overlap in market segment between the two, and VAG gets to write off Cariad. ( ? I would not want to be, say, a high level exec in the latter - or anyone, really, brought in to help redefine the software-defined vehicle platform etc. etc.)

Good point on the MacanEV - it has already departed from the v.1 platform that Taycan is running, and I perceived that to mean a "stable" line, supported for years in the future. This JV is no doubt another reset. The bright side is that I should be able to pick a Macan EV for 1/3rd of MSRP much sooner than anticipated.

This is the way things have always gone. Large companies simply cannot innovate by nature, so instead they buy up or license technology from startups which are much more agile. There is a good book on this: "The Innovator's Dilemma" by Clayton M. Christensen. The only exceptions to the rule have been companies ran by exceptional founders, Gates (when he ran Microsoft), Jobs, Musk, Bezos. None of their successors will ever be able to achieve innovation the founders can. If Tim Cook tried to pull half the innovation stunts Steve Jobs did, he'd be retired on the spot. It takes vision, guts, and yes, the influence of a founder with dictatorship power to make certain decisions, as they go against the grain of a large company and its shareholders.

I'd take CarPlay over phone as key.
apparently Rivian supports both - I'm guessing this is not a "take over" of the entire stack and VW will do what VW wants - but this is probably better than VW fumbling in the dark as a way forward (Amazon is a big Rivian customer/investor and Amazon also understand software - I'm surer Rivian's cloud integration with AWS is light years ahead of VW's cloud efforts).

Cariad's CEO is ex-Rivian, so in a way this is the moment that sanity prevailed over there in Wolfsburg. I don't know if Amazon has much pull/influence on Rivian's software side (aside, of course, from probably selling them AWS), and lately reduced their stake in Rivian. So it may be a distant-future takeover of Rivian by VAG, and joint software platform is the easiest/first of the steps. (I'm aware Ford is a shareholder, but we always kinda thought RIVN - and others - will fold and get picked up for cheap. For VAG, this infusion is a cheap viability test.)
