So we collected our new Mini Cooper SE Sport last week, it's a 52kWh battery and about 220bhp. It's Chinese made, shouldn't be called "Mini" and is overpriced for a Chinese import but my wife's a die-hard Mini fan.

Straight away there's some useful tech on there that the Taycan is missing:

-There's a "precondition the battery for charging" option to press which takes 5 mins and warms the battery up ready. No need to be using the charging planner/route planner.
-You can unlock the car with a mobile phone which avoids carrying the key (which on the Mini is almost as big as the car)
-Searching through music on a memory stick is a dream - big folders with album art and the scrolling is "stickier" too so you don't whizz past what you're looking for
-Setting a precondition schedule or charging schedule on the app is everything the Porsche should be. It's so easy my 9yr old could do it immediately.
-You can set the car to precondition the cabin when charging completes which I thought was clever. I'm having to make up scenarios for when I'd need this, but it's clever.
-You can select to automatically unlock the charge port when charging is complete. I thought this was very polite, especially for public chargers where 2 bays share a single charger. Can't decide if I'd want people unplugging my car or not but it's a nice option to have at home rather than having to go find the keys.
-The wireless phone charging works perfectly every time.
-The app is brilliant, faster, does a lot more but doesn't seem to do precondition schedules - these seem to need to be done in the car.

The cockpit/dash is very minimal and it's all through the touch screen, apart from the air vents which are just normal and wonderful.

The negatives - it has a speed limit exceeded warning that you have to disable every time the car is turned on. I hope that's not some stupid new rule that comes to all cars. The steering has zero feel, to me it feels like Power Steering Plus on the Porsche which I hate (personal preference, I know some love it). Charging stops if you open the car...we were charging on the drive and went to sit in to have a fiddle with the settings and it kept warning us that charging was paused, would now complete much later etc. Probably a hidden setting somewhere. And the cost - admittedly we went for the top trim level and bigger battery but I remember when a Mini Cooper was £16k not £40k.

Love it with the JCW kit…my wife really wants one too, but it keeps getting delayed here in the States, if available at all

bugger, that's my steering wheel shortcut button decided then, new car arrives late July. Nanny state is out of control.
I bet that Gen .1 values are surging by at least a tenner as a result. Window of opportunity to get a new MY 24 off the forecourt without those assist "upgrades" is closing fast.

I sold my Taycan GTS and replaced it with a 911 GTS + Electric Mini (previous 36kWh Level 3) for urban run-around. That's a fun combination! I can believe that the new mini is very good but the "old" one is still a great fun drive ...

Another Brexit bonus- we should have stayed in and had the opportunity to contribute to the debate and avoid this.

Congrats on the new Mini Cooper SE Sport! The black and red color scheme looks great. Hopefully there is a setting to turn off the speed limit warning, that sounds annoying.

Thanks! There is, but it re-enables itself every time the car turns off/on! Though to be fair we’ve learned to ignore it now :)

Not a mini guy, but can see why people love them. Congrats on that one.

regarding being Better I slightly remember an Artikel stating that the Electric Platform is a backwards step compared to the former Mini generation. I don‘t remember what exactly they complained about, battery size or charging speed ?

Hmm weird, I'll do some research. We didn't have the previous generation electric mini but from what I can see this one is a bigger battery, faster charging and better regen. It's made in china though so the electric system may well be borrowed from someone else.

Having been allowed to drive it a bit more now I personally feel it's lost some of the fun driving experience of the previous generation of Mini, but it's super efficient (getting 5.5mi/kWh minimum, up to 7.5mi/kWh on one short trip) and is definitely a head turner.

OP - Thanks for your thoughts on the new Mini SE. We have a 2022 Cross Turismo and a 2023 Mini Cooper SE. I was curious about the new SE because of the increased range, but not likely to see one in the states until they are made in Oxford again.

Driving the 2023 SE is very fun, but the range is not much farther than the 2012 Nissan Leaf we used to have.

Congrats on the purchase !

I quite fancied an electric mini but the seat facings were fake leather which is a complete no-no for me, I don't mind fake leather elsewhere too much but I don't want to sit on it or have it on the steering wheel, so it was a no.
For me a non-leather interior needs to be fabric or alcantara.

You think us saying no would have resulted in any difference? ROFL.

Our govt would ha e been asking for more speed curbing.

OP - you can reconditioned the interior to a schedule in the Taycan.

Wireless charging also works every time for me. I also think it meaning your phone is out of sight is good... Apart from forgetting it when you leave the car!
