I am not really happy with the Burmester System. The highs are too harsh and the mids could improve.

What are my options to upgrade? I see this site in the UK sells upgrade kits https://www.scrdistribution.co.uk/porsche-taycan-2033-c.asp but I am located in the US.

Should I start replacing the speaker first? Add a DSP ?

Have you tried fiddling with the EQ on your source device - eg play through Roon ARC and set up a filter or two?

Man, have your system checked because it is highly unlikely that the average customer (I mean not a sound professional) would be disappointed with the Burmester sound system….

Wow, you have the Burmeister and don't like it. Imagine us with the Bose or worse, base system.

I've been looking for answers to this too for the past few months, and what I'm hearing from most is that if you're looking to do it the right way, start with replacing the current amp with a DSP amp and have a proper audio guy do the tuning for it and add a proper sub too. You may find at this point that the stock speakers don't need replacing, but if you want to go further, then phase 2 would involve swapping out speakers.

I also chatted with SCR Distribution and they ship worldwide so that is not really the concern, however, that fellas suggestion was to just swap out the tweeters, center channel and the front door speakers (and for the latter, replace them with Audio Frog 8" subwoofers!). I'm not too sold on this idea yet but I believe someone on the forum has done an Audio Frog conversion from SCR so hopefully he chimes in.

sound quality is subjective of course

There is nothing wrong with my system. It’s just the highs are a bit harsh even with the treble down.

Oh no doubt. I just meant that after spending that much on the Burmeister upgrade, it goes to show that there may be people dissatisfied with it. Sound quality is indeed subjective, sadly, spending money is not lol.

I hope you get to improve your system, and I hope I do too!

Thanks for the info on SCR above. I just installed AudioFrog / JL audio in my other car and it sounds really good. The mids and highs are really smooth

at minimum I might just replace the tweeters to see how they sound

I haven't heard the Burmester system but I compared the standard to the Bose and as a straight system (controls level and no faux surround since the standard doesn't have it) I found the standard system slightly less harsh than the Bose.

It has low colouration on spoken voice and even in frequency response too.

Its headline power output spec is much less than the options but I don't listen anywhere near max volume and dislike the excess bass most car systems have. I mainly listen to spoken word and classical music.

I find that adding sound deadening material does wonders when it comes to the overall sound quality experience. Next comes upgrading speakers in their existing locations. I would start with the door and dash speakers first. If that doesn’t do it, it starts to become pretty involved to make improvements.

I am a longtime audio fanatic and have taught architectural acoustics.
Speakers have the most distortion compared with any other component in an audio signal chain.
I would appreciate a bit more ability to manage frequency response, but all-in-all the Burmester system is the best I have had. I do wish they would move over to Dolby Atmos, and abandon Auro 3D. I think a 20 channel Atmos installation would be a big improvement.

Absolutely.
The big problem with car audio is that both the speaker drivers and the listeners can not be in acoustically good positions relative to each other.
The mid and tweeter have to be too far apart to integrate well and the path length from speaker to ear varies far too much from left to right and from driver to passenger for good quality sound to be possible.
OTOH using digital signal processing it can be made less rubbish...

I do my serious music enjoyment at home or with headphones (not when driving, obviously!)

I always ignored my car audio, and did my listening at home....However, the quiet Taycan with sound-deading windows, and the Burmester system, changed my mind. While it does not compare with my 16 channel Lyngdorf/McIntosh/Wilson Dolby Atmos system, I find it a great way to listen to great music.
