People continue to confuse ESS with the standard pedestrian awareness sound.

With ESS and its on at low speed in car parks then clearly you are announcing your presence.

It's just not needed IMHO.
I've found without ESS on, people barely notice there's a car there. With it, they actually do. With 2 kids, being a kids football coach as well, I have many situations where I'm in incredibly crowded car parks with lots of kids and adults wandering around and I really rely on it being on so people actually notice there is a car there and wake up enough to not step straight out in front of your. I have had quite a few situations where I've not turned it on (in the same places same time, same people!), and had to emergency stop because no matter how slowly and carefully I drive (and I do), people sleep-walk and don't realise my car is even there. I would not spec an electric Porsche without it, because these situations are really dangerous without it imo

J1 sport sound was via 1x external rear speaker and 2x internal speakers in the rear doors. J1.2 it gets piped in via the speakers, this is probably why you need to order Bose or Burmester to get it. The J1 setup sounded better and had more external noise in my experience.

I understand but it's not sold as a safety aid. It does however highlight a weakness in the pedestrian awareness system.

So much discussion without answering OP's question.

Electric Sound (standard equipment) is whatever locally is mandated minimum EV pedestrian sound and implemented via the external speaker. This is just now spelled out on J1.2 Standard Equipment list, but was always the feature of the J1.1.

Electric Sport Sound is the composed soundtrack, that Porsche even wanted to patent as unique automotive invention but was denied. "The acousticians also spent countless hours creating the foundation of Porsche Electric Sport Sound at the soundproof laboratory of the Porsche development centre in Weissach."

@Boss Hogg is absolutely correct that J1.1 implementation was via dedicated interior speaker and several reviews mentioned that it is superior to the J1.2 implementation that is now done via the sound system internal speakers requiring Bose as a minimum.

Other discussions about the latter being optional or standard on higher trims are irrelevant to OP's question, since the OP is trying to justify to spend on it or not, but not knowing the difference. The difference is significant as I pointed out given one is external sound and the other is internal.

Case closed.

IMHO… IT’S GREAT FOR THE KID IN THE DRIVERS SEAT! I won’t take off without it! It’s a super cool sound like a spaceship on wheels!

One thing I’m personally still confused on between the J1.1 and 1.2 is how the external ESS sound differs between the two generations. External ESS sound on my J1.1 GTS is significant - is it the same on the J1.2 - or is it now only internal? I actually thought that the J1.1 ESS was produced externally only and it was that you were hearing internally. Would be a shame if J1.2 now only had the legal minimum external sound and produced the ESS internally only.

The Electric Sport Sound option on the J1.1 Taycan uses a large external speaker unit and two smaller internal speakers fitted to the rear doors …

Nice - I wonder how much range could be added back to the J1.1 without the ESS baggage - as every little counts??

how ironic that the majority of use case for having ESS is for moving at slow speeds in a parking lot lol.

I mainly use mine to ward off deers during spring / fall, dawn and dusk times.

ESS is turned off by default. I recently started using it, and the kids love it. I have grown accustomed to it too and am loving it. So much so, now I have it configured to one of the two precious shortcut buttons! lol

Don't get me wrong, I was always in the camp of hating on fake sounds (and also interior ambient lighting). But man these two gimmicks are growing on me.
