Porsche and Aston Martin are the 2 car brands that started working with Apple on the new iteration of apple car play; and the brands that are supposed to get it first.

Well, Aston Martin was faster than the slowest car brand in software, Porsche, and updated their car play intergation to Car Play Ultra.

Is Porsche going to get it soon also? Are they gonna charge for it in typical Porsche fashion? Will it be the only new feature of the next gen 911, in typical Porsche fashion of doing minuscule changes?

Personally if my 2020 taycan would get this, it would change the car from the worst software on the market to basically close to perfect.

Yeah, maybe. The Carplay gauge cluster in the Aston looks like it came out of a 2022 Kia. Not sure I want that.
You missed the customizable part of the whole thing

So I can make it look like a 2023 Kia if I want?
Or you can keep it looking and working like the old shit porsche pcm ? it is a choice after all; nothing is forced

If you’re not a fan of apple design language, android auto is also an option

I actually love CarPlay and use it every drive. This extension of the interface just solves a problem that doesn’t exist and gives you lousy aesthetics in the process.

maybe I’ll love it in a live demo (Apple has a tendency to do that, I’m as addicted to them as anyone) but based on these videos it’s a hard pass.

I wonder how they pass the regulatory requirements to ensure that the CarPlay app never fails and you are left with no speedometer. Maybe they can get away with it just falling back to the cars default UI?

It probably falls back yeah. But I also wonder how it knows when to fall back. CarPlay has a tendency to freak out or lock up sometimes. And how does the software know to fall back in such a situation? So I have the same question.

Either way, I expect it to come to the Macan (as it already offers Apple Maps/CarPlay in the gauge cluster). I have zero expectations of this coming to the current gen Taycan, previous gen? forget about it.

In CarPlay Ultra, a portion of CarPlay runs natively on the car. So certain functionality is there before your phone syncs / if your phone goes away.

Would be nice to have the option but let’s be real Porsche can even give gen 1 Taycan owners more then six colors to pick for dynamic lighting. No chance we are getting this.

I personally hope that CarPlay takes over every screen in my Taycan (but I'm not holding my breath). I have a lovely CarPlay interface in the center screen and the 3 others look like complete ass. I saw Android Auto the other day and had to immediately look away...

There are issues with PCM, but the more I use it, the less they are irritating me.

Apple and Android software isn't issue free, and I cannot stand the playschool aesthetics.

People talk about EVs taking soul/character out of cars, but I think this is a way bigger step towards that. Every caooking like a 5yr old drew its interface with crayons and that only works the way Apple insist.

As for customisation, Apple is not good at this. Never has been.

They actually can, you just need to request for the ECU responsible for that to be updated. Which they may deny you to do the update, but with it, it does allow for a lot more colors, same as j2.
