I remember your 3500-mile trip in winter to pick up your new Taycan. Thought you might have been blissfully unaware of the cabin heater problem then.
Oh no, it was a real concern, hence the heater in the trunk, and Porsche roadside assist on the speed-dial.

Hmm... I wonder if this is part of Porsche's plan to address dealer's concerns about EV's not needing service as often. So maybe it's by design, ensures cars are regularly in service.

Or maybe it's just that Porsche engineers are used to designing for a different market - customers who drive ~500miles a year (a common mileage average I see on older Porsches at auctions), and never in any adverse weather, so they can resell them 44 years later like this car (at auction this week).

It cannot possibly be worth it to Porsche to replace heaters over and over again in the same car just to keep dealers happy about selling and servicing EV's. Look at the absurd two years service price at the dealer for a Taycan and it's obvious they already had that service revenue for dealers thing covered.

I thought Taycans had a heat pump. Not sure where that fits into all this

They do, to pump heat around between components, one of them being the HV heater we are discussing here. I circled the HV heater in yellow in the diagram below.

Standard on US builds supposedly, but seems to have been an option in some markets.
It's standard in all markets.

It's one of the many components of the heating system.

It seems like there are a bunch of people here who say they had to select the option in European markets at least in earlier years. Poland for example.

Was an option on my MY22 CT4 as well.

Heat pump option consisted of some extra valves in the system shown in top left corner in the post #36 above, creating a bypass path for the coolant. It is not a replacement of the resistive heater with a heat pump. Notice the diagram clearly states this is the system with the heat pump option, and yet the heater is still present.

Got an update from service, Porsche does not automatically approve heater replacement for any car that already had the heater replaced in the past (as they put it, it already has an "updated heater"). They require a full, multi-day dealer diagnostics visit, sending stuff to Germany, waiting them to get to looking at it between holidays, etc. Of course those appointments are not available on the spot, so for me it's more than couple of weeks before my car even starts this process. No loaners until then either. And of course, no remote diagnostics capability either.

It really makes me wonder, is Porsche process designed for deter customers from buying their cars for actual driving - they only want customers who use their cars just to look at them, but have other, reliable cars for driving (so I guess not a Porsche)? I was thinking of replacing my wife's Audi with a Macan EV as the next car, but honestly, she would probably leave me if I got get into a car with Porsche reliability. And I thought Tesla was bad with my early adopter experience, but in my decade of Tesla ownership they never left be without a car to drive for over 2 weeks, nor did any of my Teslas spend as much time at the shop as the Taycan. This is such a different experience than my 2001 911C4 I got in 2001 - that car ran with nothing but scheduled maintenance (except for tires, I used them up much faster).

Pretty sure it's a Webasto part, at least originally.
Yea, but by that definition, Porsche cars are not really designed by Porsche, only final assembly is done by Porsche. I guess all that Ikea furniture should be rebranded to your_name_here, as every customer assembles their own. ;)

Point being they didn't design the heater, they bought one and installed it.
