Gears were needed, whether manual or auto, to make up for the deficiencies in ICE power delivery....Yeah, its one of those things that you can't get around to some degree - like stick, hard to find a stick shift performance car, but what doesn't make sense to me is changing "gears" in a car without a gearbox. Just like a sound that isn't real vs. amplifying a sound so its louder in the cabin for a sportier feel.
Ironically both were just reaching a real peak when electric power trains came and pissed on their chips
