I used to work on automotive camera systems full time (mostly backup cameras, of all things) - Taycan has an extremely normal, I would even say good backup camera. The reason the angle of view is disorienting is because the camera is mounted super low, lower than any other car I've seen, I assume to accommodate the physical design of the rear of the car, and then they use de-warp to to make a projection of the extreme fisheye onto a more conventional looking view that you see on the screen.

You should see some of the low cost dogshit, including literal analog connection 1mp cameras, that goes into some really cheap cars, like some of the low end Kia and Hyundai, and Chinese manufacturers. Trust me, there's nothing wrong with the camera itself.
I find this interesting because I've been designing mobile cameras for my entire career and this is the worst miniature camera I've ever seen. Granted, I've only worked on more premium consumer electronics devices, but you can take off-the-shelf lenses and sensors and all you'd need to do is customize the mechanical design for reliability. And these cameras would cost at most $20.

Yeah you’d think, right? Trust me when I say this isn’t even close to the worst backup cam I’ve seen. My friend’s 2019 miata is absolutely shambles, makes the Taycan look like a cinema camera.

there are Hyundai and Kia models shipping today that I worked on in 2018 using ten year old parts bin Omnivision 1 megapixel sensors with analog video output.

Most of the automotive grade sensors are not going to be like what you’re used to. I work on consumer cameras now and it’s night and day. Automotive prioritizes light gathering with big pixels over most other aspects

Add me to the group of saying the backup camera is terrible - by far the worst backup camera I've personally seen in a car in at least the past 7-8 years. Maybe the technology itself isn't bad, but the functionality is terrible (in comparison to other cars) - the spacial distortion on the sides are mind-boggingly poor, imo anyway.

That being said, it's the only real complaint I have of the car - it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. And I'd take it over any other car with the best camera in the world every single day.

So I missed the previous page's post showing the angles. I'm wondering if there's a different backup cam for the surround view cars vs non surround view?? That's super disorienting! For sure that ultra wide mode doesn't show up for me.

My car is a 2020 without surround view and the FOV is nowhere near as distorted at least in my mental image of it... I'll take a pic later today.

Yes, they are different.
