Battery capacity and range estimates

As much as I distrust politicians and have a healthy cynicism around governments, I very much doubt they'd legislate on whether having trip data on the left side of an instrument cluster instead of/as well as on the right.

Never underestimate the incompetence of people, especially in politics, government, and academia (places with a lot of people who have little to no practical experience in what they're talking about). Most of their failures stem from good intentions but inability to foresee unintended practical consequences.

Not to bash Tesla when they are down but ...

I own a Tesla long range Y and a Taycan RWD and both give me around the same range, winter or summer. I believe the problem with the Tesla is (besides Tesla's inflated range estimates) phantom power drain, where you lose battery capacity (range) when it is idle. The Taycan has no phantom power drain (or at least I can't see it) if I leave the car in my garage for week at a time (for example when I'm out of the country).

That said, the temperatures here in lower NY are in the low 20's F this week and I had no issues with extreme power loss or power drain in either of my two EVs. People love to find reasons to bash EVs but I think they're great: I never go to a gas station, I charge my car at home once a week, the cars both have incredible power. Plus of course, you cannot match the Taycan styling: the car is gorgeous. For me, EVs match my life style. If I drove 500 miles a week, I would probably get a gas car, but with the amount of driving I do, my EVs are fantastic.
