Dashcam, prewiring, and custom work

I’m trying to sort out what I should do with regards to the dash cam for my upcoming taycan.

I optioned the prewiring siding with the peace Of mind for having the OEM solution and it just being plug an play. After reviewing the specs and some examples from the Porsche dashcam, I’m not happy to pay the outrageous markup for a very poor quality camera.

so I’m looking at how to make an A139 pro work With the minimal amount of effort.

I can bridge the A139‘s hardwiring kit to the prewired 3 pin connector, but there is no documentation that I can find for the connector that is pre-wired for the rear camera (if anyone has the front + rear camera and has a picture of the rear camera’s cable, I would greatly appreciate it).

this leaves me with figuring out how to run the cable to the rear window.

I was debating just shoving it into the creases in the headliner, but I was wondering if anyone had experience with removing the A, B, and C pillars to make it easier to snake the cable behind the headliner rather than on the sides.

Now I know my way around tools, but I’m frankly not comfortable with removing the panels myself, lest I break some plastic part while we are still in the honeymoon period, so I was wondering if this is something which I can have Porsche’s technicians to do?

also another possibility is that if there is some wiggle room with The headliner around the sunroof, I might be able to easily snake the cable that way around (assuming there isn’t a nest of cables already there)

would appreciate any advice/ pictures someone who has been willing to operate on their Taycan might have.

I’d be interested in how you get on. Whilst I agree that the Porsche OEM solution is relatively expensive for what you get, I’m not planning on downloading videos of my journey to work and playing them on my home cinema Etc

I’m only after a solution that:
- Can monitor the car while parked and save a recording should my car be damaged by a third party
- Can be used to record incidents / accidents that occur whilst driving that can support an insurance claim (or even defend against police action) against a third party

As I understand it, the Porsche dash am does all that and ’guarantees’ no warranty issues down the line, so it’s probably going to get my vote.

A couple of take-aways from the prior threads on this topic, which I recommend you read. First, the factory pre-wire avoids the hazard of wiring installed over the side airbags, which may cause harm in the event that the airbags deploy. Second, the Porsche dash cam has a file system that makes it difficult to download the rear camera recordings and synchronize them with the front recordings.

There are lots of threads for the a139 pro install. Some very well documented.

I bought the same dashcam and will be installing it in two weeks (when I get the bloody car that is).

My plan is only to cross the A pillar (passing the cables under the airbag). Once I reach the bottom, I plan to tuck the cable for the rear camera under the lateral trims and bring it to the rear. Seems to be the easiest way and avoid the headliner route.

Another member also pointed out that the hardwire kit has a ferrite ring 10 cm from the camera connector so we'll have to cushion that and hide it behind that trim near the rear mirror.

I intend to take pics of the entire process once I have the car.

While this is more of an A139 discussion, I'll throw FitCamX into the mix. I just installed one and it's pretty easy. I did pay to have the rear camera cable run from front to back but I did the install my self. Parking mode and GPS is available if you order it correctly - I didn't get either option. The cam itself integrates seamlessly into the the trim and the wiring is done via the rain sensor and no need for the pre-wire.

The guys at Best Buy actually run it from back to front because the extra cord can be hidden better at the front instead of getting all the way to back with a coil of extra cord to hide. But to answer the question, I'm not completely sure where they ran it. I know they ran it from the center towards the passenger side under the headliner panel but I don't know if they just kept running it along the roof or down the door jamb and back up the A pillar to the cam.

Sorry I couldn't provide a definitive answer.
