I think it’s even worse. The typical pork project is something like a bridge or weapons system component contract. At least people can drive across the bridge and be employed at the defense contractor. At first glance, that looks to be the most direct evidence of pork-barrel spending that I’ve ever seen.
What am I missing? Is it indeed an inspirational space that will be the driver of dramatic new development that will benefit the larger area, as the assembled pols seemed to say?
By contrast, the $12m center is usually empty, even when open.
The target audience is the rare conference meeting or bat mitzvah reception or something like that.
My ski race was the only regularly recurring event on that side of the mountain at the time of the proposal and was even featured on a marketing website by the town when trying to obtain government funding.
But I cancelled the race in part because of disgust at how the town cut out all the volunteer trail maintainers and patrollers from the center design and planning process.
