OK. The dealership agent described it as extending the original warranty by Porsche after Porsche determined the price point for extended Taycan warranties from its several years of seening the model in the field. I took them at their word.
You agreed in the "Porsche" contract that no oral statements would be relied upon by you:

I have fairly extensive written correspondence with my dealer about this agreement as well, which covers a number of aspects of the agreement. The first few words of the agreem are:

"PORSCHE(R) Electric-vehicle Service Protection, Porsche Financial Services. Porsche Protection Plan."

That correspondence does say that the coverage is purchased "through Porsche", which confirms the 3rd party aspect of the underwriting. True, I didn't dwell on this aspect of the agreement but as this is (apparently) the only Porsche-endorsed warranty extension in the U.S. I didn't see any alternative since I plan to keep the car for 10 years, assuming I'm still around and driving then.

Happy New Year to all!

Do those words in the header of the contract mean that the agreement is a "Porsche-endorsed warranty extension in the U.S."? How is 'Porsche endorsement' meaningful to a service plan buyer?

The contract says there are two parties to the service plan agreement.

I believe Tooney and I are in agreement that the contract is through Porsche to a 3rd party (Safe-Guard). It seems to me that Porsche has endorsed/approved/recommended this as a means to extend coverage beyond what came with the car.

My contract also provides for cancellation for a full refund in advance of the expiration of my Taycan's 5-year warranty. Can someone recommend a better alternative to this Porsche/Safe-Guard coverage? I'd be open to that for sure.

If there is no better alternative to this Safe-Guard thing in the U.S. (except to sell the car before 5 years and buy a new one or go without defect/component failure coverage), then I'm not sure further discussion is useful.

The other popular option is Fidelity.
You can obtain quotes here:
https://factoryprotect.ratessys.com/direct/collect/auto
Use code RENNLIST for a small discount -- that dealer/broker and another one compete for business over at the Porsche forum.
I also found a fun thread at an R8 forum with lots of boasts of outrageously expensive repairs that were covered by Fidelity.
I've also seen plans for Porsche offered by three other providers, but they're kind of obscure, with no apparent track records.

For those in California, Fidelity is not available in California per their website. I just tried to get a free quote.

Although so far after a couple weeks of trying only five out of ten Porsche dealers have gotten back to me on service plans inquiries, definitely pays to shop around: for a 72 month (from in-service date) + 100k miles (cumulative) plan, the SafeGuard quotes have ranged from $4,475 (Nashua NH) to $6,200 (Herb Chambers, Boston metro area).

That's really interesting & helpful, thanks. When I was looking I contacted 3-4 Porsche dealers and even though a couple of salesmen expressed interest, they never came back with a number.

I bought the maximum coverage policy from XCelerate Auto (XCare) because they cater to EV owners, have good customer ratings, and exclude little from coverage. But, they are new to the Porsche Taycan, so it will be interesting to see how well their actuaries have predicted the cost of claims.

My advice: Take the $6500 (or whatever you are comfortable setting aside) and put it in an online savings account. When/if the money runs out, sell the car. You will make out far better than buying extended “warranty” insurance.

Any other car I would agree but but not the Taycan. A relatively common repair can exceed that $6,500 easily. If $6,500 is a deal breaker get rid of the car before insurance runs out.
