Fixed Charging Period with Octopus Go

Yes.... I set my minimum charge to 55%, with a target of 85% between 00:30 and 04:30 and it manages it.



It may or may not do it from 50% SoC depending on ambient temperature etc.





Perfect, I've just moved across to Octopus so will now look at moving onto the Go tariff. I generally do a longish run to the Midlands and back (212 miles round trip) every Monday so currently charge to 100% for Monday morning but we are just installing chargers at work so that will allow me to set off with 85% soc in future, hopefully they will be fully installed tomorrow ?

FYI - if you can switch to the Intelligent Octopus your cheap rate hours are extended - 11.30pm to 5.30am.
A couple of extra hours over the Go tariff.

So on the bigger battery with a usable 83.4kw and the Porsche Mobile Plus which typically gives me about 6.8kw then over 4 hours I should be able to add about 32% in one night say 30% for ease and margin of error?

When you plug the EVSE in the car will tell you when it will be charged to your preset level. This is part of the handshake between car (charger) and EVSE. From this you can determine if the charging window is sufficient to reach your target charge.

I do most charging at home and rarely use public evses.

I have a 7 hour window which will accommodate an 85% charge from 25% without drama. Normally I top up from 50% or so and therefore less time needed. Tonight it's 44%.

I tend not to overthink it and the saving of normal rate and off-peak is tolerable should I need to dip into it. It's pennies at the end of the day.

Good plan... I'm probably overthinking it with my spreadsheet lol. I do about 17,000 miles a year and quite a few long trips for work so have to use some public charging. I've assumed 25% public charging and of the 75% at home I've assumed 80% within cheap rate hours. I use nearly 7,000 kwh for running the house and I guesstimate another 4500 kwh for the car. The saving by switching to Octopus Go ia about £100 per year but I haven't allowed any saving fir setting household goods to run at night and I'm probably being too cautious on amount of charging I can get done by just topping up 30% each night to get back to 85% over a couple of evenings. If I tweak my percentages I can soon get to a £400 saving

You own a Porsche - never an exercise in cost savings!

You are already saving with an EV and with the price of energy likely to tumble this year then it will only get cheaper.

All great info and experiences- thanks to that have contributed…….there is only one minuscule sentence that Im not sure will come to fruition: ‘price of energy likely to tumble this year then it will only get cheaper’….

I really hope that it does but I’m not so sure it will, have a suspicion that the UK energy prices may fluctuate but remain at the same levels. A gloomy prediction further still in to the future, is that once petrol/diesel usage/demand starts to drop that the government will seek to replace their lost tax revenue by adding it to kw price …….

Yes, Octopus restricts it carefully, you need all the right components and has to pass a trial charge. I'm on Intelligent and have Ohme Pro. Works fine but leave the car to work it out as there isn't any smart integration currently. Ohme don't have the Porsche API and the Octopus app isn't seeing it as a device yet... still in Beta apparenlty. But I did the maths, and the 10p rate does save overall...

I have been too lazy to do any calculations but guessed that, since I don’t do a huge mileage, having a higher domestic rate in return for less expensive charging at night was unlikely to be a benefit, so I didn’t bother.

It allows me to just plug the car in whenever I feel like it/need it.

I did notice that if I plug it in for an hour before I go somewhere it warms the main battery enough for both the consumption and performance to be better than it would with a cold battery - which is what I would normally have if the charging stopped in the early hours.
I am sticking with this system.

Thanks for info, I am soon to look into a new home charger as I have been in the past benefitting from Tesco/Pod point free charging, but that’s ended and I’m trying to review my options. My supplier is Octopus, have a Tesla and Renault EV but will be changing our cars to CT4S and a Cupra Born later this year - reading these threads to gleam which to jump to - ‘Go’ or ‘Intelligent’, ‘Go’ tariff will work with my current and next cars but the ‘Intelligent‘ tariff is better but manufacturer restricted.

my current thoughts are to go for the ‘Intelligent’ tariff plus associated Ohm charger on the prediction that the software and interface will eventually include all EV manufacturer?

Does anyone know if you can have a different charger with the 'Intelligent tarrif?' I'd like something in the future to go with my solar panels. We currently have a Zappi from Impra Charge (which we love) but want to take advantage of the intelligent tarrif.

Don’t need intelligent and not Audi or Porsche compatible.
We have the Taycan and an Etron so I alternate the cars.
I leave the cars dumb and the Podpoint only comes alive between 00.30 and 04.30. Never have a problem.
I plug the other car into 3 pin for a trickle charge so the batteries are both warm for morning start up. I use dishwasher and washing machine at night too and smash the under floor heating.
This day shows my usage.

9kw at 34p

Wow that is impressive, by my calculations Go is marginal for me as I use 6900kwh/pa on household use. I have assumed I would only shift 5% of daytime use into cheap rate... dishwasher and washing machine. Not sure about underfloor heating in the cheap period as surely it is cold during the daytime?
