You think the officer who would be willing to pull you over to see if it’s “real”(considering it matches exactly to the back plate) wouldn’t pull you over for no plate at all? Especially out of state? Doesn’t add up.
If you prefer to roll the dice with no plate or don’t like this option fair enough, but it’s certainly less of a reason to get hassled.
Personally, I use the StoNSho, and keep it in Sho mode all the time (except at Cars & Coffee).
For anyone more into Sto mode though, would seem to help the cause of "But officer I really do have a front plate!" when instead of just waving it, you can actually click it in, and honestly state that you previously had it attached, then removed it for some sort of valid reason, yet neglected to reattach it.

As for what might attract law enforcement attention ...
... if a cop passes you, then seems unlikely to look in the rear view mirror to check out the presence of a front plate ...
... if a cop sees no front plate, then the car could be from a state that has no such requirement, and upon looking into the rear view mirror to see that rear plate is indeed from the cop's front-plate state, or some other front-plate state, seems unlikely to bother making a u-turn and pursuing for that kind of offense ...
... if a cop in a state outside of CA seems what looks like some sort of homemade joke, then this seems likely to ensue:

... which makes for an amusing series of videos, but otherwise would become old after awhile.
(The best one is where the Canadian cops say, something like, "Don't worry, this is Canada, not America, we won't shoot you.")

I'll have to ask my friend who's a cop in Dallas and my wife's cousin who's a cop in Manhattan.
They both have all sorts of amazing stories, so either scenario might not get their attention!

One of the fellow cast members in a play I was in once told a story of road-tripping from Delaware down to Texas and going to a bar in some small town. Upon coming out, there was a gang of good ol' boys giving him a not-sure-how-serious-and-probably-don't-want-to-find-out hard time about his fake license plates from some made-up place that nobody had ever heard of.

Now, in fairness, DE's plates (at least in the 1980s, perhaps things have changed) do look like they were both designed and stamped in a jailhouse broom closet, and that "THE FIRST STATE" at the bottom looks cheesy as hell.

But still...
A friend of mine moved from Pennsylvania to Texas and enrolled in community college. When he told a guy he was from Pennsylvania, the guy asked if ‘that was where it was light six months of the year and then dark six months of the year.’ No joke.

My buddy said yes…

I was pulled over once for no front plate. I laminated and installed my temporary registration on the rear plate mount because I tinted my rear window where they used to affix. They let me go (with “remember to install your front plate when you get it”), but it was an organized, revenue drive operation - about 6 cruisers setup at an exit from an office building park in the afternoon, and they pulled over anyone without a front plate. Maybe they scouted the parking structures to estimate their addressable market size. As I was leaving, there was a line of cars pulled over waiting to be served. Audi seemed to be overly represented in that group.

^ Ouch, what a wasteful use of law enforcement resources to generate revenue.

Although this is worse:

Could be worse

I couldn't find the worst offender, but remember reading about a small city on the east coast which confiscates tons of cash on suspicion of drug crime (apparently having a wad of cash on you is sufficient) and never gives it back, even when people are found innocent and jump through all the hoops.

The police bulletin in the weekly newspaper starts off with a few real crimes, all of them impaired driving plus a few true criminals from Holyoke and Springfield arrested on outstanding warrants.

Then it’s onto the fun!

My all-time favorite is probably the kid who called 911 because the mother was serving only healthy food.
(Really!)

My wife was ticketed recently for not having a front plate on my 4S. The cop in Oakville, ON stopped her specifically and solely for the absent license plate.

Does anybody fall in the intersection of "Sto-N-Sho" and night vision? If so, please tell me it doesn't block the camera.

My used CT does not have night vision.
However, the StoNSho places your license plate so low, essentially flush with the lowest edge of the vehicle, that any sort of sensor placement there seems highly unlikely.
