Has anyone ever seen a window crack in a perfect circle inside the front windshield glass on my '20 Taycan 4S? I can't figure out if something hit me or if it was vandalism or what? It's perfectly smooth on both outside and inside glass surfaces, so the crack seems to be internal. I'll have to get it replaced regardless. Porsche dealer wants a King's Ransom to replace it and recalibrate the cameras, perform an alignment, etc. Anyone have experience with OEM glass companies and whether they are worth the risk since they would cost two thirds less (and insurance will cover it while insurance won't pay for the inflated dealer price)?

For what it's worth, here's what Google's AI Overview has to say.
A windshield internal crack is a stress crack that occurs when the windshield's layers expand or contract at different rates due to extreme temperature changes. This can cause the windshield to crack, especially if the temperature change is sudden.
Is this MY2020 Taycan new to you? Perhaps a prior owner mistreated it such as by using very hot water to clear the windshield ice in very cold weather.

Regarding windshield replacement, here are some prior threads:

I also got a quote for about that much and insurance will only cover around 1/3 of it

I replaced three of them. The price is accurate.

Here is a PSA:
The windshield installed by Safelight is about $1,300 -$1,500. The OEM windscreen must be specified or they will put in some third party windscreen (cannot be calibrated with safety systems).
In two of my three cases, the driver safety systems had to be recalibrated. In one of the replacements, it did not have to recalibrated by the dealer. That saved about $2,100. Note: Safelight cannot calibrate, it on can only be done through PIWIS.

I added specific glass coverage to my AARP/The Hartford policy with a $100 deductible but have not tested it yet with the Taycan windshield.
If Porsche charges $3500 to replace & recalibrate the new windshield then would I have to use Safelite to replace the windshield with OEM glass & then take it to Porsche to have it recalibrated? Are you saying Porsche charges $2100 for the recalibration? If so that seems to be quite extreme and in the US 3rd party shops have the right to repair so there must be 3rd party shops in the US that can do this since it shouldn’t matter if it’s an ICE or EV Porsche. Right?

If you use Safelight they will install the glass but cannot recalibrate. They may say otherwise because they assume their recalibration software will work on the Taycan. It will not work, I learned the hard way. I know of no 3rd party shops that can recalibrate as they do not have the PIWIS to do it, nor could they make money on it. I was told by my service advisor that it takes hours to recalibrate.
After the three windscreens I had replaced, I would not waste my time with Safelight. I would just bring to a Porsche service center. Why go through two separate appointments at two different locations? The price won't change - you will just waste time ferrying the car all over the place. We are all paying exorbitant insurance premiums for these cars. This is one of the reasons why!

Thanks. I need to make sure that my insurance will cover a Porsche windshield replacement by the dealer with my added glass policy. If they won’t then there is no need for me to pay extra for this insurance.
I’ll update everyone once I find out if they do or don’t.

I had to replace the windshield in my Cayenne due to a tree limb falling on the car.
Safelite did a terrible job, and I had to go to the dealer to get it properly fixed.

Did your insurance cover the proper repair? If so, who is your insurance?

Yes, the Metlife, now Farmers insurance covered it.
I have had good luck with them on payment of claims.
I have not had any claims on the Taycan.
I decided to pay for replacement a damaged radiator myself....a stone from a gravel truck punctured the core.

I will find out next week when I ask my insurance (AARP/The Hartford) if they would pay for the dealer to replace the windshield or any glass on the vehicle other than side windows which I would expect Safelite could replace since there are no safety systems to recalibrate. I did call Safelite to ask if they can replace the panoramic roof glass and they said they do not offer this service.
I assume any insurance company will categorize a cracked panoramic roof panel glass under collision coverage with likely the higher deductible most people carry. You should be able to use Porsche to fix a panoramic roof but instead of the typical $100 to $250 deductible on cracked windshields you would pay $250, $500 or $1000 deductible unless you have selected a specific glass breakage/damage policy like I have added to my auto policy.

Going forward, I want to be sure to get Porsche OEM quality glass in my repairs,...I don't believe Safelite will guarantee that.
I replaced my windshield in my 2016 Panamera, and Metlife/Farmers actually called me to confirm my desire for Porsche OEM glass. Of course, I said yes and they paid the premium for replacement at the Porsche dealership.
