So I took a bristle brush to the Alcantara after 5months ownership. Nothing firm, a relatively soft brush, the kind you might polish shoes with.

Seemed to be doing a nice job.

I was stunned at the dust coming off the steering wheel. A very fine dust. I presume this is just dead skin cells.

Anyway, the dust kept coming.. I just wanted to check in with others that its normal?

I'm still a bit anxious about how to maintain it properly.

I bought my car lightly used (under 500mi on it), and first proper cleaning of the steering wheel with a brush I thought I'd just hit a doormat with a bat. I don't know if that was normal, but I haven't had a dust storm again in the 3k miles / 7ish months since. I've been lightly cleaning the interior at least once a month, but only getting the steering wheel a little less than every other month (try to get it on the 1000mi intervals).

I recently dusted my GTS race tex steering wheel for the first time in almost 2 years with one of these brushes. It didn't look that dirty or anything but a cloud of dust flew off. So no, you're not alone.

If you want less dust, it's worth spraying a microfiber towel with some gentle Alcantara cleaner and wiping the steering wheel before brushing it down. Here's what I use, FWIW:
  1. Proper Detailing Co Brush
  2. Pinnacle Label Alcantara Cleaner

Ive been brushing it every week and it's the same amount of dust as the first day I got my car and brushed all the Alcantara.

It's normal

First off, Alcantara is a processed fabric, not a leather material like suede.
What is Alcantara made from?
Alcantara is made from a blend of 68% polyester and 32% polyurethane, synthetic textiles that are extruded, combined, and put through a variety of chemical and textile processes before becoming as Alcantara.
So any “skin cells” you see are probably broken down polyester.
I’d be cautious about using a suede brush on the material, although it may raise the nap, you will eventually wear through the fabric.

Alcantara is essentially microfiber. It’s pretty durable when not abused. There are many videos on YT on how to clean and rejuvenate. It’s not for me but I wouldn’t worry about it being durable.

Just be careful what kind of brush you use. Plastic bristles would damage the material. A soft natural fiber brush is the best choice.

Just gave mine a brush. First time from new, now 4,500 miles. Plenty of white dust! Feels much softer now though, which is pleasing. Used a soft natural brush (Gyeon Alcantara cleaning brush).

the fact that the dust was off steering wheel only and not the copious covering of Alcantara over the whole of the interior makes me think its dust from hands.

But the point is well taken and noted
