Work in progress new feature: vehicle document storage. If your glove box is embarrassingly full of vehicle paperwork then this feature's for you

Like every other Electric Sidecar feature, I'm working toward making this feature be as automatic as possible by integrating the latest iOS 17 on-device machine learning + vision analysis features.

For example, New York State insurance documents use pdf417-based barcodes which make them easy to scan in just by taking a picture of the document. Unfortunately New York seems to be the only state doing so, so for everywhere else the app will make a best effort at OCR + on-device machine learning extraction of the content, at a minimum attempting to extract the start/end dates and VIN for insurance cards and registration.

Because most of these documents will include VINs, I'll also be able to surface this information alongside the other vehicle details in the vehicle's page. E.g. if registration's about to expire, Electric Sidecar can notify you both in-app and eventually through widget badges and local notifications.

The feature supports any form of document import, so you'll be able to scan in maintenance documents / receipts / etc, which will contribute to building a comprehensive history of your car that can be useful for a variety of reasons.

Isn’t there any Oauth or similar authentication methods. No offense but inserting logins like that is bad practice in general…

Last release of the year is v1.4.0-72, which includes a small easter egg

Lots went into this release over the last week, most notably the new Documents feature! This new feature lets you import and scan any document related to vehicle ownership and organize it in-app alongside the rest of your vehicle information. This is a great way to keep track of vehicle expenses, registration documents and expiration dates, and maintenance records. It's like a digital glovebox

The great part about this new feature is that it uses all of the latest iOS 17 on-device machine learning features, including vision analysis of documents and content data detection. No data ever needs to leave your device, and everything is stored encrypted at rest on your phone.

Because of the variance of data, I do need to wire the analysis up to the "card" representations, but I expect to support more types of content over time using the same analysis. Out of the gate, if you scan a New York State Driver's license, New York vehicle insurance, or California vehicle insurance, these should automatically turn in to nicely rendered cards.

This release also includes the newly unified Garage page on the iPhone, which aligns with the watchOS 10 design language in preparation for graduating Electric Sidecar to the Mac and iPad next year.

I also want to give a huge shout out to @freeforall for their help with the app's French translations! Lots of work went in to tuning the hundreds of strings in the app.

Texas as with other States allows digital cards if requested by police at a traffic stop or other circumstance.

So pretty easy to simply download the full or mobile version of the insurance ID Card as a pdf and import to Sidecar if needed. Already have this digital version in my Apple Wallet but nice to have ability to add other docs too to SC.

v1.4.0-75 is now out with a focus on resolving crashfixes and miscellaneous bugs.

1. The #1 crasher is related to 0xdead10cc terminations of widgets due to accessing SQLite as part of background threads. Electric Sidecar no longer starts any background data processing threads as part of app extensions which should resolve the large majority of these crashes.
2. The efficiency statistics chart caused a couple of crashes due to what I suspect to be out-of-bounds errors. These are now defensively handled.
3. Removed some Core Data logging statements that were causing off-thread allocations of Core Data instances, and subsequently crashers.

Additional improvements:
- Your chosen app analytics preference is now synced between your phone and watch; the preference was previously independently managed which was likely not the expected behavior.
- More Tesla API responses are now correctly handled. Please keep sending those error logs to [email protected] if you see any errors!
- Porsche accounts that require a captcha re-auth will now show this error state in the widgets.
- Re-authenticating with captcha now automatically refreshes the vehicle state once successfully reauthenticated.
- When Porsche accounts get into a captcha-required state, they now stop making network calls until the account is reauthenticated with a new captcha. This helps minimize excessive API calls to the Porsche servers.
- The Porsche account page now shows which auto-detected locale Electric Sidecar is using for the Porsche APIs. This can affect the localization of some strings in the app. E.g. if you randomly see German strings throughout the app unexpectedly, it's because Electric Sidecar couldn't confidently determine an appropriate server locale to use and fell back to the German servers. If this happens, please send a screenshot to [email protected].

I've got a meeting in a couple weeks to hopefully get access to official Porsche API endpoints, and in prep for that meeting I'm refreshing the electricsidecar.app website with all of the latest features supported by Electric Sidecar. To help make the site as representative as possible of the product, I'd love to gather any screenshots / testimonials from everyone who's been beta-testing the app so far.

To take screenshots on your watch, first Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch. Tap General, then tap Screenshots. Turn on Enable Screenshots. You can then press the digital crown and side button simultaneously and the screenshot will show up in your phone's Photos album.

I'm particularly interested in collecting screenshots of lock screens and Apple Watch watch faces to show the various ways that Electric Sidecar can be personalized
