Is the My Porsche App Really Necessary?

I’m retiring in a few weeks and I’m planning on tossing my cell phone into the junk drawer.

I am retired and keep my phone but mainly for family whatsapp messages.
I make/receive about 3 to 5 phone calls a week.

The MyPorsche app:
--provides access to the updated manual with additional "GoodToKnow" info. Appears the manual is now also available on MyPorsche website.
--provides access to more detailed status about the availability/non-availability of EA fast charging stations than the EA app. (And, yes, the reported status may not be reliable.)
--enables charging at EA stations if plug&charge is not available or not working. If plug&charge is not working, you must either use MyPorsche app, EA app, or credit card at the charging station to get a charge. I've not used a credit card to pay at an EA charging station, but have read direct credit card payment is often unreliable.

I really only use it to check if car is locked and progress when I'm charging away from home…I also check in the morning to make sure it charged overnight…

other than that not a lot of functionality.

I have both. Slowly been using the MyPorsche more than Connect. I hit the precool button all the time when in a store and ready to head to the car. They get hot in the FL sun and nice to have it cool. I have unlocked it for my wife to get in when she was waiting at the car. I switch the Direct Charging on and off ( got home and want to get some power added as I am low and if I need to run out then turn it off and let the car finishes charging overnight to 85%). Check trip and usage and see how far and fast the dealer took it on the test drive.
Not super important, but has uses. I do not remember it needing my DL (have it it a while), but I am sure you have the dealer a copy at purchase and not like it’s information that can’t be found.

P.S. at the dentist and typing this on my cell phone and reading sports and news instead of a 2 year old magazine. Cell phones have many uses that are not work related. ?

Serious question. If I don’t really use it for anything, do I need it at all?

The reason I ask is that I’m still on Porsche Connect, which I don’t use for anything, and was trying to set up MyPorsche in advance of the Connect shutdown. Of course rather than just transferring my car over, it wants me to upload my drivers license and my registration. Fuck that.

So I ask, is there anything whatsoever on the app that is required in connection with the car?

Not really you can just operate your car free of the app like any normal car, it just has supplemental functions that some may find useful.

I don't think there are any necessary functions in the app for a 2022 (or any year other than 2020).

For 2020, you have to start your complimentary Electrify America sessions from the My Porsche app. For all other years, you have plug and charge.

That’s true. And then my 2020 still haves trouble with linking the EA charger and my Taycan.

I also use phone for AppleMusic, e-banking, etc… sometimes even to check whats new here…
Speaking about app, i still prefer old version, but i have both….and no one ever asked me to upload any personal document at all.
