Can you also get Apple maps on driver display and HUD with a J1 Taycan?

The really missing element – especially for the original Taycan model – is for Apple Maps to be able to kick off battery preparation for fast charging. If that happens – then CarPlay is a viable long term option for Taycan to have a constantly updated and improved infotainment solution that is not dependent on Porsche.

I will ask the lady next time I complain with her that the feature is still missing ;)
As someone that has very likely spoken with the same lady; you should keep in mind that they are clueless. Most of them don't know the difference between my20 taycan and my25 taycan. They wouldn't know software specifics, and will tell you what you want to hear to keep you happy, to keep you a customer, as they were trained.

We may still see change in our life time, or maybe we may see the last day of Porsche.
They will eventually get it right. Besides, Porsche has always been ultra conservative in implementing new tech, so nothing new here.

Porsche is not selling in China anymore. Management won't be able to hide behind profit margins for much longer with how the market is going.
There are plethora of reasons Chinese buyers don’t buy Porsche; aside from shifts towards supporting more local brands and increased local competition, the economic downturn and uncertain future outlook have had a greater impact across the entire luxury segment. Brands like Bentley (-44%), Ferrari (-44%), and Rolls Royce (-57%) all sold fewer cars in China in 2024 (Jan-Sep). Luxury fashion groups are also selling less.

In status-conscious China, much like in the West, owning a performance luxury car like Porsche has always been about the image first, with performance as a welcome addition.
(I’m not talking about performance-driven car enthusiasts)

Chinese consumers recognize that their homegrown brands offer great value for money, especially in the EV space, and they praise the technological features. However, they seem still unable to rationalize a premium price for these homegrown brands’ top-tier models … they also concede these brands aren’t perfect and won’t be replacing traditional premium names like Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche anytime soon.

Take for example Japanese and Korean manufacturers, they have struggled to create luxury brands that rival the stature of European marques, both in their home markets and globally.

Not that China won’t be able to have a true luxury brand. But that would take decades, it’s a legacy and perception game.

The imminent threat from homegrown competitors lies mainly in the small- to medium-sized car segment — a market that largely leaves Porsche untouched, though it affects brands like BMW.

The first step in considering anything luxury is rarely rational; technology has always taken a back seat.

Porsche and Germany clearly can't keep up with the US and China/others in software, which is becoming one of the most important aspects of automobile development and quality. I'm not sure what Porsche and the German auto industry will do... ?
I have to admit that I am curious to see what (if anything) will come out of VAG's $5 billion investment in Rivian. The joint venture is supposedly focused on software and EVs. If they can successfully replace Cariad with something that can actually produce modern automotive software, it might be money well spent...

EV maker Rivian falls short of revenue projections for third quarter

The company reported a net loss of $1.1 billion, or $1.08 per share, in the third quarter, compared with a loss of $1.4 billion during the same period last year.
hmmmm - not sure Rivian is in a postiion to "help" other automotive companies - and VW may never see anything from the investment - pity Rivian has good software people - I've worked with many of them at other successful ccompanies - but I'm not sure Rivian is in a position to be providing material help to other companies.

we'll see how this plays out -but I'm not optimistic.

She seemed to know what she was talking about judging from the rest of the mail, but you might still be right. We’ll find out eventually.

I hadn't read this thread until now when I kept noticing it getting longer rather than all it needed, a single reply saying "No" ;)

The first software I wrote that earned me money was on punched cards in Fortran and ran one a CDC6600 (iirc) one of the 2 computers at Imperial College, London where I studied.

I have Asperger's and so actually dislike change unless it gives a big gain. As I have written often I don't care about software updates in a car myself but am most concerned to think that cars may go the way of phones where largely unnecessary updates are foisted on users to make them buy a new version with more computing power.

The only thing I can think of that has come out of my bi-generational phone update is a wasting of my money and now I am retired I resent that.

If cars go the way of mobile phones, or DSP active streaming loudspeakers they will no longer have a useful life long enough to justify their typical price and I will be looking to spend a maximum of £10,000 on a new car if it needs throwing away every couple of years.

Rivian - didn't realise they had invested in them.

Is this good news - potentially yes as Rivian uses Unreal Engine to power their UI in their cars. It won't be long until we can all play Fortnite in our Porsches. (actually you can already in the BMW i7).

Porsche - the most expensive gaming console in the world. But it looks good in a garage mancave, especially if you wrap it in PPF, dust it daily and never drive it. Hopefully they will connect the steering wheel and pedals to the UE, so you can use them for racing games. :p

VW and Rivian officially kick off $5.8 billion joint venture, announce leadership

The new joint venture, dryly named “Rivian and VW Group Technology, LLC,” will be led by Rivian software chief Wassym Bensaid and VW Group chief technology engineer Carsten Helbing. Teams will be based in Palo Alto, California, initially, and three other sites are in development in North America and Europe. Developers and engineers from both companies will fill out the ranks of the new venture.

Rivian also showed off a prototype vehicle to a small group of reporters at its Palo Alto office. According to Bloomberg, the vehicle was a VW test vehicle with Rivian software that was created by the joint venture’s engineering team over a 12-week period.

pointing out a few things referenced in this thread. I have a 22 taycan, I have a 25 taycan loaner, and a 24 macan ev.

the new taycan does not offer any CarPlay improvements that I can see over the first generations.

The macan does display routing and maps on the center / instrument display and displays routing. When you select this view, it puts the instrument dash in turn by turn view (zoomed in) and the center dash display shows a full route view.

It does not yet support EV routing or EV charge information, but supposedly a software update is coming that will enable this.

Note, only Apple Maps will show in the instrument display, (or the built in nav). You can't get google maps to show there. I haven't tried Waze or others.

Thanks for this comparison, it helps to know where some things stand!

My previous vehicle was a Polestar 2 — it had Apple Maps in the instrument cluster, but few other advanced CarPlay features. (No wireless, no EV routing, no navigation metadata in tile view)

When you'd choose the maps instrument closer view, the CarPlay Apple Maps in the center display would still have the turn-by-turn vs overview toggle. If you hit the toggle, it'd swap — so you'd get turn-by-turn in center display and overview in instrument cluster. I believe this is CarPlay functionality and not car-specific.
