Twenty years from now you're not going to look back and think, "Wow I'm glad I didn't drive an exciting and engaging car every day that I could." If you can afford it, driving a luxury performance car on a daily basis will often be the highlight of your day. Very few objects give you that much predictable pleasure. It's not even a close call. Ditch the guilt and embrace the pleasure you have worked for decades to afford.

The things which give me the most pleasure and satisfaction are
1. My family, 4 children and 9 grandchildren, I had no idea when younger how much joy they would be.
2. My sound system(s), I am a music lover and listen to music at home a lot now I have retired.
3. My car(s) I don’t drive as much as I used to so perhaps less important than they were but still fun.

If you can afford it go for it.

FWIW I have never bought a car during my life which cost more than my then current audio system because of hours use per week and depreciation…

I just love the positivity and spirit in this thread. It's not an immature display of "YOLO" but people who truly appreciate what they have. Barely a day into owning my 4S I said to my husband, "Why didn't I buy my Porsche 10 years ago!!?" and the answer was obvious that the money wasn't there, but if it WAS, I sure hope I would have done it. I was going to wait 'til I was 50 to finally get my dream car, but I've dealt with a lot of crap the last few years and busted my ass to take care of my family, both younger and older, and I just decided no more waiting and everyone supported me.

And after nearly a year of planning, and weeks of financial evaluations both near and long term, I said several times to my husband, "There's always the chance that this will end up being a huge mistake, but it's not like we've never made a mistake before, and we'll recover." What matters most to me is that I know this was not an impulse purchase, I gave it months if not years of consideration, weighed pros, cons and alternatives, and made my decision with support from family, friends, and trusted advisors.

Still I never expected the enjoyment this car would bring, and it's not even just from the driving experience, but the way it's brought friends and family together. My daughter and I picked up pizza last night and I saw all the guys come out of the kitchen standing in the window watching me put the food in the frunk. Every time I turned around they acted like they were getting back to work, and then I could see them all emerge again gawking as I got in the car. So we gave a big smiling wave and I slowly backed out and then floored it out of the lot (it was pretty empty). My daughter was giggling so much that a simple ride to pick up Domino's becomes an unexpected joy.

I had a P90DL and the Taycan gets much better real world range. I can consistently get "250 miles" where I struggled to get "200 miles" in the Tesla. Tesla over estimates, Porsche underestimates. I put it in quotes because I never actually ran the battery from 100% - 0%, but seeing the efficiency numbers in mi/kwh I can do the math myself. The current Teslas will get about 25% less than what they claim, and the Porche will get rated or higher (going off of EPA numbers).

Exactly. The Tesla gets much less than the advertised range, and in fact the company is being sued for exactly that, and for intentionally manipulating the software to hide the actual, much lower range. Whereas the taycan gets much, much greater range than the EPA estimate. We charge to 80%, and consistently get around 255 mile range, and have seen 311 miles at 100%. My wife does mostly in town driving, but we also did 1,302 miles on the freeways driving home from PECATL, as I have documented in a video on my channel. So at worst, we have found (and others have said the same) that the Taycan and Tesla get the same range in real life. If you are a "driver", there truly is no substitute. For the buyers who want more of a practical appliance, like a Toyota in ICE cars, then Tesla is certainly a great choice.

Holy shit! Curious minds need to know what sort of audio system you have??

Several!
Main one now has Goldmund Epilog 1&2 speakers, a Devialet Original d’Atelier amp using mainly a Goldmund Mimesis 36 CD transport and, for my old LPs, a Goldmund Reference record deck with Ortofon A90 cartridge.

I also use a pair of Tune Audio Anima horns with various amps, usually a Job INTegrated but since they are 109dB/watt sensitivity 1 watt is enough to blow you out of your seat :)

I have a super vintage setup in my study and pro monitors in my bedroom too, which aren’t used much but I don’t want to sell.

I think the Porsche is its own thing...you buy it because you love it. If you're shopping in terms of "specs per dollar" than yeah, something like a Tesla will always beat it. But, if you'd be happy with the Tesla than I'd say dont even waste your money on a Plaid. Just get a Model 3 or Model Y. Its not like the Model S has better build quality or materials not to mention it was Teslas "beta" version...sure they've updated it but its still based on that same ancient platform. And its not like the Model S is particularly engaging to drive either...so overall just not much benefit. The extra acceleration is just a party trick that you'll use once or twice, get nauseous and then never again.

A few years back I read(can’t remember where, but you can google) - they ran a 400+mile model s and Taycan performance battery down to 0, Porsche beat it. Go for the Porsche, of course your on a Taycan page ?‍♂

“Tesla gets lets than the advertised range and Taycan gets more” this is true but there is more to it. Any range advantage (exaggerated or real) Tesla has disappears in the only scenario where range matters: long distance driving. At constant highway speeds Taycan’s efficiency shines, and the two are very similar in range, proven by multiple tests.

Life is too short and can be taken from you at a moment's notice. Earlier this year I was contemplating the future and thought, "if I were to die in six months, what would I regret?" Then, I wondered why I didn't do/buy those things. I've always wanted a Porsche, and especially the Taycan. I have a Tesla already which I enjoy, but the Taycan is just on another level. I had the Taycan for a week and loved it so much, we traded my husband's Audi in for a Cayenne.

Life IS too short but also remember it’s never too late. I was 83 4 years ago And decided I’d like to find out what an EV was all about so I test drove a Tesla and made up my mind to buy one. 3 major operations and 2 years lost to the Covid catastrophe I said the hell with it! At age 85 who knows what the future holds. I’m going to buy one! Luckily for me I couldn’t get a Tesla to drive after they had added the yoke so I stumbled on to the Taycan and ordered one of the first CT’s. Next to marrying my wife, it was the best decision I ever made! Go for it and buy the one you want!

I remember my first Porsche, some 12 years ago. I started with a Cayenne and it wasn’t just the car! The way you are treated was an order of magnitude above Audi. I was thrown the keys and had the test car for a full day! Next thing, hours on the configurator and a new car ordered. I’ve never looked back, being on my fifth Porsche and second Taycan. Yes they have their problems, I know having had five NEW, different models gives you issues! Saying that, Porsche have always sorted all issues out. Oh, and I still catch myself looking back at my GTS when I leave it. You can’t say that for all cars. . . . .

Go with a Taycan and don’t look back. Like others said, just looking at it puts a smile on my face. Conversely there are a million Teslas on the road, it just doesn’t feel particularly special. I’ve yet to ever use a fast charger, so the range and charging network is limited value to me. IMO, planning a 3-400mi road trip in the NE is pretty trivial, considering many Tesla Superchargers here have the magic dock and there is good coverage from other networks. Any farther than that, and I’ll take a plane.
