And in with the new:

Porsche Taycan My new Taycan 4S Taycan 4S

It has felt like an eternity waiting for my first ever Porsche, had this for 7 days now and not stopped smiling. Even though the BHP and Torque figures are fairly similar to the i4 M50 the difference in driving is like chalk and cheese. Thoroughly satisfied so far. Had some initial trouble with Ionity but all sorted now. Thanks to all that commented on the public charging thread.

Congrats on your new purchase. Had my 4S since April (ex Demo 7k miles) changing from BM 530e. Makes me smile every time I drive it. One of the best things is not watching the MPG gauge disappear off a cliff under hard acceleration. And then travel from Gloucestershire to the midlands and back for £3!!!! Enjoy.

Ty I actually had a 530e before the i4 was a comfortable cruiser I will give it that.

The 530e was the best car I'd owned............... Until my Taycan arrived after 15 years of saving for a retirement present for myself!!!! :)

Care to elaborate on the differences you feel between the old and the new? I briefly considered the I4 M50 before going with the Taycan, and am sure I made the right choice, but I'm curious about your in-depth perceptions after ownership of both.

Yes absolutely, give me a couple of weeks as I am still in the honeymoon phase with the Taycan. It impresses me more every single day so far.

I have now covered approx 7500 miles in the Taycan 4S and in an overarching statement "I cant really find a lot wrong with it."

I had my i4 M50 for just over 3 years and covered 95000 miles. Had a single factory recall for a battery part where BMW had it for 9 weeks awaiting the part from Germany and then apparently fixed the issue with a software update :)

High level I4 Likes:
Boot space relatively practical
Acceleration in a straight line
Manual adjustments for ventilation etc
HUD - Excellent for navigation
Charging speed (relative to other EV`s not including Taycans)
IDRIVE Dial
Apple Carplay
Regen options
Dashboard real estate

Dislikes:
Tyre wear
Front seat comfort
Handling when pushing hard
Bluetooth issues
Range
Route plan charging or lack off
Hans Zimmer sound

Taycan likes:
Apple Carplay
Acceleration and handling full stop
Interior feel and quality (Extended two tone leather.)
18 way seats
Configurable dash
360 cameras
Heated steering wheel (UK based its freezing here atm, love it.)
Frunk small but useful
Adaptive cruise
Smartlift
Porsche electric sound (Not for everyone but I quite like it)

Dislikes:
Centre console wtf were they thinking there.
Push to pass disabled at low battery temp (Nearly caught me out the first time)
Doors need quite an effort to close.
Not enough real knobs Vol/Air Con etc

Comparison:

The handling of the Taycan as expected is far superior than that of the I4 particularly at higher speeds being feeling much flatter/stable/confident in the corners.

The four BMW driving modes ie Economy, Comfort, Sport and Sport plus align pretty much 100% with the Porsche modes. however I drove the I4 in eco primarily in eco where I drive the Taycan primarily in Normal.

Acceleration in the I4 in sport plus in a straight line was quite brutal the Taycan feels more linear and progressive due to the gearing I guess from launch and also push to pass when executed at lower speeds.

Brakes not a lot in it in my opinion maybe a tad more feel in the I4

Regen I preferred the I4 here as it had more options not that I want one pedal driving just a wider range of options. The Taycans momentum is staggering though it just keeps rolling and this took a bit of getting used too.

Front Seats - I went for the 18 ways (As I had the option BMW Sports Seats) and was a little concerned whilst waiting for the build as I had read a few reviews where a lot people seemed to prefer the 14`s. I personally love the 18`s and cant fault them. They are way more comfortable than the BMW equivalent and my wife agrees which is very important :)

Range - I4 UK Summer approx 245. Winter 220. Taycan Summer approx 310 WInter 285

Economy - The Taycan appears way more efficient in Summer but less so at cooler temperatures.

HUD - I4 brilliant, debated optioning this but decided against. I havent seen the HUD in the Taycan but research suggested it was quite limited for the cost. I did test drive a Macan and the HUD seemed a bit too much for me. Due to the fact you can configure the dash in the Taycan to support the Sat Nav I do not miss this as much as I would of thought.

ACC - I only had the basic cruise control on the I4 but do love the ACC on the Taycan although I havent nothing to compare too.

Build Quality Interior - This is far superior in the Taycan and in my opinion does not look dated 5 years on. A more premium feel.

One other thing to mention I had an awful lot of blowouts in the I4 potholes and general uneven wear, while touch wood the Taycan appears to handle these issues at least at the moment.

All in all I love this car and still make excuses to just go out and drive for no reason!!

Awesome review! I like the HUD. Coming from a Defender that had it, it was a requirement for me. It shows me the basics (speed, navigation, speed limit) and prevents me from looking down a bit to see the screens.

Edit to add that when used in conjunction with Porsche’s navigation system, it even highlights the road ahead if you need to stay in a certain lane or need to exit.

In terms of HUD, the one in Taycans is disappointed in my opinion compared to the others, especially BMW and Audi, where you have augmented reality with the arrows pointing exactly where your need to go. I've done a test drive of the A6 E-Tron Avant and it's so much better, I wish Porsche had that.

I'm curious though about ACC. You say you love it, do you have any other options like lane keep or InoDrive? I do have ACC as well and while it's fine, I find it not smooth when changing lane in traffic

Hi, Yeah lane keep and innodrive. Having said all that I dont have anything to compare the Taycan too. So coming from nothing its a blessing and I do a lot of motorway driving.
