Ok thanks, good to know! Didn't realize that timers/profiles didn't apply to DC charging. Yes, I do keep an eye on the 30 min mark. But if just left, even if direct charge isn't selected, DC charging will just go all the way to 100%?
yes for J1.1 Taycan (pre-2025 MY Taycan's) that is clearly the case - Taycan has no battery SOC limit for FastDC Charging…but…
  • I'm not so sure J1.2 (MY 2025 Taycan's and later) is the same - can someone with a Taycan J1.2 confirm the new software still does not allow battery SOC limits for FastDC charging?
  • future software updates may add this limit to Taycan
  • sometime EA limits certain charging sites to 85% SOC - and will begin idle fees at the 85% mark - this is to address highly congested sites and people sitting in the stall for hours to get from 80% to 100%
    • I'm looking at you Chevy Bolt owner…
  • Macan EV's _DO_ have a battery SOC limits for FastDC charging - and it's respected - on my road trip home from PECATL I typically charged to 90% SOC and once the limit was hit the charging session was stopped and I unplugged.

Hi everyone! Firstly, thank you SO much to the community for the amazing content that is on here. As a new Taycan owner, if have found the reading/help in these forums second to none.

So after reading all of the issues with the Porsche Connect Mobile Charger, even though I just came back from my Porsche dealership with having the recall addressed, I thought I would play it safe and just get a third party charger for the home. I settled on a Tesla universal wall charger and am happy with my decision. The question now is that should I just manage the charging schedules, monitoring, etc thru the My Porsche app or the Tesla app? To be honest, I have not even charged my car as yet so don't know what information each of the apps show. I know that we should be keeping the charge between 25-85%, so still trying to figure out how to set up all that.

For those of you who use your Taycan with the Tesla charger, what's your norm routine to watch things.

Thanks!!
Porsche charging profiles and timers whether on car or on app are a complete and total horlicks. It ends up doing whatever it wants and generally charges to 100% irrespective of what's set. Quick search on here will bring up many threads which show how badly implemented this is.

I avoid the whole lot and simply let the Tesla charger manage when to switch on and off from the app so that I can maximise overnight savings (Octopus Go). Porsche best avoided as utterly useless confused mess (who wants to set a MINIMUM charge?!) (shrug)

I have never had an issue with the Porsche charging profiles. They always work as intended.

Mine ignores home profile (85%) and just charges to 100% whatever I do with it. ?‍♂

My profile on Porsche app seems to be working just fine so far. Set the “minimum charge” to 85% and it stops when it reaches that level.

truth or not the major point is "pick one"

either do it entirely with the EVSE

_OR_

do it entirely with the car

having both tends to lead to problems....

the problem with having the EVSE do it - is that you have to leave the car in a mode where it's ready to charge _right away_ when plugged in…this can lead to problems - let me explain.

the _ONLY_ tool in the chest for an EVSE to "control" a charging schedule is to "play dead" - there no abilty to schedule anything in the SAE J-1772 protocol for EV charging - so if you want to prevent an EV that's ready to charge from charging - you "play dead" - i.e. provide no power or communication…this succinctly prevents your Macan/Taycan EV from charging…

the problem is that even though the EVSE is "dead" the car still knowns something is plugged in - and something is plugged in but not providing power the car my decide unlaterally to throw a 'charging error' since it's not able to communicate with the charger even though it's plugged in - once it's thrown a charging error you have to physically remove the charging cord/plug and plug it back in again - this is an awkward interaction when all you want to do is charge overnight during off-peak billing times…

now the same can happen in reverse - if the car is on a schedule "not to charge" but the EVSE wants to charge - some cars "play dead" - and this confuses the EVSE and it will declare the charging session an "error" and require it be unplugged and replugged in…

in my 12+ years of EV ownership I've had nothing but problems with "smart" EVSE's - but when I using a DUMB EVSE and let the car do the work I've had far fewer "missed charging sessions".

you can do what ever you want - no problem.

my suggestion is:

pick one and only one thing to be in control of charging (either the EVSE or the Car)
my personal preference is the car because that works with both dumb and lobotimized EVSE's
but hey - what do I know?

best practice based on my actual experience is let the car do the scheduling - and disable _ALL_ the scheduling options your EVSE may or may not have - this for me has avoided any surprised overnight failures when I get in to the vehicle in the morning…

my $0.02/YMMV

I suggest carefully going through the charge profile set-up again.
I suggest having software designed properly. Been EVing since 2017 and this is the first time I've ever had a problem.....

Yep that's what I did, ignore the Taycan and do it with the EVSE as at least that works.
