Hardly surprising....its a bigger capacity battery.
Alright know it all ?, it is surprising that a sports car beats the Tesla and Merc that are very much not sports cars and very much designed for those longer journeys in mind.

To be fair, It's hard to call rear-wheel drive base Taycan a truly sport-car. Dual-motor Tesla in the video is much more efficient and even has better 0-100 time (what of course doesn't make it a sport car). So no surprises here, for me personally Taycan's efficiency is still a bit disappointing.

Porsches brakes don’t catch on fire when used aggressively. It’s very much a range vs performance scenario. Performance being lap times not 0-60 once or twice.

There were no performance tests in the video. I just found @Sebbo's statement "surprising that a sports car beats the Tesla and Merc" quite controversial. Taycan's efficiency was one of the worst. The only reason why the Taycan went further is its large 97 kWh battery. While it's nice to have it for sure :)

You can’t judge range without judging performance. The only reason Tesla gets better range is because it doesn’t perform on the track.

And again, you ignore the fact that the taycan used there was a base RWD taycan; while the tesla they used was dual motor AWD - faster acceleration, bigger top speed, faster on any curve.

So yes, we can judge range with or without performance, and tesla is still best when it comes to that, by like 25% more, due to much more efficient motors.

If you put a bigger battery in the tesla, it would drive more range than the taycan, because it has more efficient motors.

I have no idea how the Tesla would perform on a track vs the RWD Taycan. I would never take any of them to the track anyhow. There are better cars for that.

I like the test since:
- It was done on normal roads of U.K. standard quality (not the best)
- it was done in typical U.K. wether, cold, rainy etc.
- it was done at the same time for all the cars.

Taycan did very well, but as has been pointed out, all due to the large battery. The three most important things when on a long road trip, IMO, is consumption, charging speed and charger availability.

I agree with the comments that Porsche has increased battery to get this result. Not worth any upgrade from a j1.

To summarise - bad Tesla brakes helps its efficiency, okay :D (and probably dual-motor setup, that leads to better 0-100, 1/4 mile) But please just stop, no-one compares handling/suspension/brakes/Nordschleife records in this test. From the video we see that RWD Taycan was less energy-efficient cruising on highway, that's it. Is it because Porsche is more performance-focused ? Maybe. Does it change the results ? No

And Lucid just announced their Air has been certified at 5.0 mi/kWh. Impressive!

That means you can have a much lighter car. Efficiency from motors, inverters, battery!

Cornering speed is limited by mechanical grip (where I'm guessing the Taycan has an advantage from wider tyres), not by the number of driven wheels.

No, but lack of air through the brakes, makes bad brakes. Just look at the front of a Model 3 and a Taycan, notice the difference? One has a lot of airflow through for cooling, one does not.

Yeah I was pretty surprised to be honest.

not sure it’s worth the outlay as I have a GTS which gets 300 ish in good weather and I’m not a long distance commuter so a stop for food and a toilet break for me and a 5 year old doesn’t hurt.
300ish in UK?

I have the same car and 259 (2.9 miles / kWh) is the best i can hope for in the summer months.

What is your consumption total to date?

This video essentially reveals that the Taycan is very inefficient….even after a refresh. Porsche doesn’t need to be #1 but they shouldn’t be near the bottom for the cost.

Surprisingly the new Taycan is not much better in terms of efficiency than BMW i5 which is on ICE platform EV and a bigger car. Where are the Porsche drive train improvement efforts?
