Fell in love with the 928 as a kid in the 80's and have had a Porsche as my "dream car" ever since. A few years ago I decided my 2012 Hyundai Sonata would go to my middle son when he turned 16 and I would move on to an EV. With his birthday and driver's license approaching this summer, I started looking at 4 door, non-SUV EVs and didn't really like the (pretty limited) options in my $50-$70k range. Then saw some good deals on Audi e-trons compared to sticker that were still out of my range that then led me to the Taycan and the (sorry if this is triggering for some!) depreciation discounts on low mile dealer titled inventory.

Got a good annual bonus a few weeks ago and thought why not try to stretch my initial range enough to get not only my first EV but also my first Porsche. After a couple of weeks of research, searching, and test drives I took delivery yesterday of a CPO base 2023 Taycan with 3,400 miles that spent 8 months as a dealer loaner.

I had been lurking in this forum heavily these last couple of weeks and gained a lot of valuable insight from everyone's opinions, advice, and experiences. There are still a few things I haven't come across answers to yet, so hoping to get some guidance in this thread.
  1. I'm good with saying "Tie-con" when talking aloud about my car, but can't quite bring myself to say "Poor-shah", is that considered a "Foe-pah"?
  2. There's no Porsche owner secret wave, pinkie thing, or glove box full of rubber ducks I have to know about, right?
  3. During one of my test drives a Tesla pulled up alongside me at a red light and got my attention and was doing all he could (via mouthing and hand signals) to get me to race him when the light turned green. Is that a common EV and/or Porsche thing?
  4. My dealer gave me both the Porsche mobile charger connect kit (but minus the recalled part) from the original equipment and a new JuiceBox 40 to use until the recalled part comes in (and that I can keep after.) Is it worth bothering to take the JuiceBox down when the Porsche part comes in and remount everything? Or just keep it up and store the Porsche kit in case I ever get a summer house in the Hamptons ;)
  5. I know that 80% is usually the max point to charge the battery, but is it ok to do a full charge once a month or so? I have to travel to the office occasionally and could probably do it roundtrip and go from 100% to 20%. There's one Level 2 in the office parking lot but it's for the whole complex so not a guarantee it will always be available while I'm there. And no convenient EA stations with DC chargers on the route, either.
  6. Should I occasionally get the battery down below 10% or more, like it's sometimes recommended for phone batteries?
  7. Should I avoid topping it off (to 80%) after every drive, even if it's something like 15-20 miles roundtrip?
  8. It's not listed on my spec sheet because the dealer said it was something they do to all their loaners/demos to protect them for selling value, but supposedly I have a "clear bra" paint protection film. They said they didn't charge any extra for it when they priced it, but is there a way to see/tell that it's really on there?
  9. The QE1 Storage Package is on my spec sheet and I assumed that was the rubber mat trunk tray and the interior storage, but is that all? I forgot to ask the dealer.
  10. I work from home and will only put about 5K yearly miles on it (if that) so don't see hitting 50k miles for 7 or 8 years. I have 3 years, 4 months of factory warranty plus another 2 years from the CPO warranty. I can add 1 more CPO year for $2,700 and declined for now but then I also know how expensive a Porsche (and EV's in general) can be for repairs and wondering if I should consider it more seriously?
  11. I'm still getting quotes on a NEMA 14-50 outlet install in my garage so it might be a week or two before I can charge at home, but my neighbor has a Level 2 outside his driveway and offered to let me charge there, if needed. He didn't ask for anything, but any idea how much I should slip him anyway, maybe per hour I use it?
Think that's it for now. Thanks!

I would recommend getting a quote for simply having the L2 charger wired directly to your panel, instead of going outlet. One less thing to go wrong and you can get a higher amperage charger if you wish.

Would that mean the electrician would also have to install the charger EVSE, and I assume remove the plug/cord? And how difficult is it to change out the charger EVSE to the Porsche one later, since that's also not hard-wire ready out of the box, I assume?

Welcome to the club.
1. You must learn to say Porsche correctly. Your dealer can recommend classes
2. Your glovebox didn't come prefilled with ducks? Oh wait, nothing fits right into the glovebox.
3. Some people believe acceleration from a stop is the only way to rank an EV. They will try to race you in the quarter mile but it will turn out only to be an eighth.
4. Use the Juicebox and see how you like it. The Porsche charger (actually it's an EVSE, not a charger) can be a spare.
5. Charging to 100% occasionally the night before a long trip should be fine. It's a battery, not unobtanium. Unless it's broken, then repair cells apparently are unobtainium after all.
6. Paging the science people. No, it's not the same chemistry as your phone.
7. Charging every night is fine. The recommendation is not to exceed 20% In a session. But borrowing your neighbor's electricity every night might annoy them.
8. Paint protection film (PPF) will be visible at the edges of the car or rolled just around areas like the hood. It requires more than a clasp and two fingers to remove.
9. No idea, but have you not sent away for the Zuffenhausen premier build code report yet?
10. Look around at other prices people are paying for warranty extensions. That sounds like a lot for just one added year. No, seriously!
11. If your neighbor complains, just say, "I thought you were cool" and walk away. Or reach out to @daveo4EV who can help you spec out a seriously cool setup in your own garage and then you can tell your neighbor to shove it.

It's a great car. Read the forum and enjoy the drive :like:

It looks like the Juicebox 40 with 14-50 cannot be converted to hardwire. You would need to exchange it for the hardwire version. Also, it looks like even the hardwire version supports only up to 40A. Some EVSE like Chargepoint Flex can do either, and go up to 48A. You probably will never need that difference - overnight charging easily works with 40 or 48. Just be sure you have an industrial 14-50 outlet and you'll be fine. I've had my Hubble 14-50 outlet and charging 40A for a year. You def cannot hardwire the Porsche one, and you'd have to go back to 14-50. But either way, I'd save the Porsche EVSE in the carrying bag to take along for road trips.

Do you recommend that because I could plug into a regular 120 household outlet?

1. Please try to say Por-shah - it's the man's name. But where they got tie-con from I don't know.
2. I think Porsche drivers used to wave passing on country roads. Not so much now.
3. Don't get into street races.
4. Save the Porsche EVSE for trips.
5. 100% ok if you are heading out right after. Don't leave it like that if possible.
6. No.
7. If you want to baby the battery, top off to 70%.
8. PPF: Fingernail? Sunlight?
9. ?
10. Lot's of threads here on value of extra warranty.
11. Level 2 is ~8kW, so maybe $4 per hour.

Yeah that, although you'd get maybe 35 miles overnight. Maybe your summer house or a friends house has a 14-50 for later when they get the part. The juicebox isn't portable, really.

Well, there actually a kind of secret wave.............but not many know it or practice it today. This dates back to the early 356 days in Europe when approaching 356 drivers would flash their brights at each other. I learned of this with my first Porsche back in 2000 or so when an approaching 911 driver flashed his brights at me (I was driving a 964 Model 911). I mentioned this a a PCA meeting and someone educated me on the history and encouraged me to flash my brights at an approaching Porsche - and I have never stopped doing it. It seems that the tradition has fallen away but not for me. The difficult part today is with so much unintended road rage. I am cautious about flashing an approaching Porsche if I am pretty close to the vehicle in front of me - giving him the wrong impression that I am flashing him for some unknown reason. So, even with that, I still like to keep the tradition, so if you are driving in the Dallas/Fort Worth area..................I'm gonna flash you!

But where they got tie-con from I don't know.
Turkish meaning "soul of a spirited young horse" Porsche cite.
@The Noid make sure you know this, because you'll be expected to recite the meaning of the name Taycan at your first service.

Welcome @The Noid and enjoy!
Excellent answers above, but that won't stop me:
1. Tie-khan (or, as it's spelled!), and Por-sheh (as it's spelled!).

2. Uh, no..? (looks sideways) (we don't talk about that here, on a public forum..)

5. Please charge and use the car as you need. 100% isn't, really, but do keep in mind that until about 97% the charging rate (on L2) is higher - the last couple percentages of SoC really go very slowly (L1-slowly). I find, usually, that the diff between full and nearly-full is academic wrt distance, so I usually set up a target of 100% after the planned departure time. That way, I can count on at least 95% (so most of the range) + 1-3 bonus percentages.

6. Maybe; but with the intent of leaving it overnight (for bottom-end rebalancing). I try and avoid getting too low when my next charging will be high-speed.

8. The content of the storage package changed over time - earlier models had no lip for the tray under the center console, but '22 or '23 brought that as standard. Not aware of other differences. (Rubber) mats would have been an accessory, not a car option.

10. I'd defer until current coverage is about to expire.

11. I believe the universal currency is beer. Don't overthink it; IMHO cash is demeaning in this context.

Congratulations neighbor! Stay away from the EA DCFC at the Newcastle Wawa. It seems there’s always a Chevy Bolt owner’s convention there clogging up the chargers.

I wouldn’t think twice about having a 14-50 outlet installed. I don’t understand the angst some have about the outlet wearing out. Most people will rarely/never unplug their EVSE after it’s plugged in…what else is the average EV owner going to use a 50a outlet for? I don’t see most of them knowing how to weld...many don’t even want to drive their car.

1. I think the correct pronunceation is 'tie-khan'.

7. Topping up regularly is good practice.
ABC = Always Be Charging.
Even if it's small amounts.

Congratulations on your new car. Hope you enjoy it!

I would install the receptacle so it’s easier to replace the equipment if it fails.
