If you want to lower the risk of breaking/damaging the glass you can cover it with a foam pad or similar when not in use in daylight.

NOTE:
The camera isn't available in daylight anyway (BUT the camera is still working as a safety feature and anti-collision device for people/animals).

Mine is available any time (always shows on the instrument cluster). The thing that gets disabled in daylight (or very hot weather) is pedestrian/animal detection.

Right, that's what I meant.
FYI: the pedestrian/animal detection is always on (although not highlighted in yellow during the day)
I once got crossed with a pedestrian at daylight and the car immediately reacted and initiated an emergency stop and showed the pedestrian in red in the night vision on the cluster (although I wasn't driving with the night vision tube active).

So something like this would let IR-light through?

I think you misunderstood.
The foam is temporarily there for protection and to absorb the impact of a rock/stones (at daylight).
When you actually need night vision (at night) you just simply take the foam off.

Update for the thread - because a lot of people are worried.

If you search on eBay for PAB980552 or PAB980552A (latest number), then there's a lot of cameras for e.g. 800-900 EUR.

The camera is used on a myriad of cars - Bentleys, Porsches, Mercedes etc, all the same OE supplier part number - 631226500A

Yes, if you go to Porsche you have to fork out 6000 EUR + VAT, but why?

I also doubt you have to code the camera to the car. There is a control unit for it, which you probably have to, but the camera itself is a very simple device, there's only a 4 pin connection, wouldn't surprise me if it's analog. In fact, I think it is extremely likely the camera for e.g. a Mercedes could work on a Porsche.
