My 2022 Taycan was delivered to me yesterday. I love the car, but only upon taking delivery and not before, my salesman casually said "oh because of the chip shortage we can only send you one key, but whenever Porsche sends us a second key we'll send it to you".

I told the salesman I'm very concerned, what happens if I'm out and about and the key falls out of my pocket without me noticing. His response: "oh in that case we'll send you a new key". I pointed out the absurdity of that statement, in other words, does he expect me to wait a couple of weeks to get a replacement key while meanwhile my car is sitting locked and unattended in an unprotected parking lot??? I also told him that because he's saying that they will get me a second key if I lose the first, that I expect the dealership to send it to me RIGHT NOW, and that the dealership and/or Porsche will pay the cost. The salesman said he's pass it on to management, so far I've heard nothing. I just sent an email to Porsche USA outlining my complaint, so we'll see what happens. And by the way, if Porsche simply had the ability like BMW to put a digital key into the Apple Wallet, then this would be zero issue and I'd happily just have one physical key.

It's OUTRAGEOUS AND GALLING that I spend $120,000 on a car and I only get one key, particularly when the salesman admitted that he can get me a second key if I lose the first one.

Not a happy customer and I'm certainly not feeling love for the Porsche brand at this moment.

Just enjoy your new car. There is a shortage of chips and more in the world. We just have to share what is available between all off us. If they sent you the extra key now perhaps someone else needs to wait a bit longer for his/her new car. Is that really what you want?

no I don't want that, but being candid, especially having once before lost a car key, it scares the crap out of me not having a second key, and as I said having to abandon my vehicle in an unguarded parking lot for perhaps 2 weeks or more.

And this wouldn't be a problem at all if Porsche simply had software allowing it to create a key in the Apple Wallet. Knowing that there's a chip shortage, why not do something they ARE able to do which is put their people on it and allow for that???

Since BMW provides that feature, why can't Porsche???

yes good advice. The only thing I'd add is that I should chill out with a shot of Casa Azul

Several people on here with cars stuck at ports and unable to take delivery because of missing amp and other components; I think they would swap places in a heartbeat with you :). Maybe invest in an apple tag (or similar) if you are prone to losing keys?

Buy an Apple Airtag if you are worried about losing your key. Or a Tile if you have an Android phone. You probably won’t ever use it but it may give you some peace of mind

I think the logic here is that they need less keys as backups for lost keys that to cover all 2nd keys immediately.

For example, if they have 24 keys available and have to give everyone 2 keys, they can only cover 12 cars.

If they only give everyone one key and only have to keep 20% for spares for lost keys, then they can cover 20 cars, with 4 spares.

In reality, there may be no spares and it’s just allocation of JIT keys, but same basic principle. The number of spares they need to cover is less than “everyone”.

So, they can provide a 2nd key immediately “if required“, but that doesn’t mean they have 2nd keys just laying around available that they are withholding.
