Hi everyone, I was curious if anyone knows the more technical side of things when it comes to the Passenger Display? Especially in europe.
It have understood that the passenger display now has a privacy coating layer where the driver can’t see the display from an angle.
I was curious if the coating is just a thin film applied to the glass or if its wedged between the screen and the glass.

In short: How do i remove it?

I would guess it’s a film of some sort, like the ones 3M sells (used to at least) to put on your laptop for privacy on flights etc.
I doubt they would put it as an outer layer though so probably not removable unless you take the whole thing apart, if then even (most likely integrated in the production process)

@Roppe That's what I am afraid of... it is such a shame. Maybe someone else knows if there is any possibility of removing the film?

I agree it’s a shame. It would be ideal if the filter was electronic, only activating during video playback. I wouldn’t order the option now, but I really like it on my J1.

Not removeable, and not sure why the need of the removal. The display only works when there is a passenger. And does nothing special the middle display can’t do. And watching videos while driving sounds fun, but please don’t. I have gen1 and the passenger display is the most unuseful option I specced. Totally buying it again, since it is the wow factor when somebody sees the inside of the car.

@Jasper4S Well, it’s not about watching a video while driving—I wouldn’t do that—but I just love the look of screens extending from one end to the other. It gives the car a more modern, high-tech feel, in my opinion. I would even love to have a "Taycan" logo displayed while driving. To me, it just completes the interior.

Also, if I have a passenger asking questions about what’s on the screen, I can’t help because I can’t see what they see (yes, yes, I know, one should not be distracted while driving).

Trust me, you’ll see the Taycan logo the first hour before it bores you, and even the album art option is boring since it is black and white with a lot of opacity. So I don’t even look at it anymore. The screen is worthless when there is no passenger. I even turn it off during night trips since the displays are not OLED and black is not black, so you’ll see light coming from nothing

@Jasper4S Perhaps you are right... I am so used to OLED panels that I forgot about the backlighting of regular displays. It's strange why they didn't use OLED for the Taycan. Surely, it could save a bit more energy and, if anything, enhance the modern feel?

A little. But that's a customer saving.

The additional cost of the OLED hits Porsche's profits.

I wouldn't mind paying more for a “Display Plus” package, where all displays are higher res OLED and also includes a passenger display. But let’s not give Porsche any ideas ?

The main thing I would miss, on long journeys with the family (ie passenger present), I use Waze via CarPlay for nav, but also have PCM nav active for charge planner (preconditioning etc). Its nice to have the PCM nav on the passenger screen so you can see the status of your upcoming charge stop (ie how busy it is and how many free bays there are) - its also nice just to be able to glance over and see music info (kids also read it from both back seats to see the name of the track thats playing). Limiting it to being only visible to the passenger - purely for the ability to possibly play video is a huge shame - Id rather not have the video capability and be able to see the screen from anywhere.

@BullitX , you may be able to replace the 2025 dual screen with 2024 version without the coating. I don't know this for a fact, but would not at all be surprised if the old screens fit and worked on newer cars.

Hi all, it’s not a coating it’s actually a technology developed in Germany that allows the pixels to be viewed in a narrow view (directly in front of the display)

So in theory, thought software, you should be able to make that narrow field the driver instead ?

Probably not. There are however other systems that can electronically toggle different angles. I think Mercedes uses this for some models. It’s essentially the same technology that is used for glasses free 3D monitors, except that instead of a 3D effect, you display different content in different angles.

Why Porsche decided to cheap out and not use that, is a different question. I guess like always the answer is that it would also require software changes beyond their capabilities.
