One of my biggest moans since Nov'20 has been the abject absence of many 50kW+ EVSEs near me which are configured within the Charging Planner. Today with some surprise they have all started to appear - battery pre-conditioning is now a real prospect should I need it.

Joined up thinking is of course still missing and none of my new finds appear on My Porsche App!

Baby steps I guess.

Does battery conditioning kick in if below 175kW rated though? Be great if it does, nothing worse than a 50kW running even slower than that in the winter…

Most – if not all – 50kW chargers in UK and Ireland will run at 400V – meaning that the DC charger in the car (either the standard 50kW or the optional 150kW unit) will have to double up the voltage to 800V to charge the Taycan battery,

That process will always introduce a few kW of loss – the best I've seen is 48kW going into the battery but 46kW is more common.

This has nothing to do with battery conditioning.

The threshold is 50kW and above - so basically most DC chargers. Providing you have enough time to allow pre-conditioning to work whilst you drive to your Nav selected charging location you should spend less time charging given the increased battery temperature.

I've have experienced 49.1kW on occasion - not a precise calculation ever given the various variables involved.

A kW here or there isn't material at the end of the day.

Ah cool that's good to know. Not sure how fast the Taycan charges on a 50kW with a 2C battery but I had to sit for 30mins on my iPace at 25kW on a 50kW till it ramped up...(have to use DC charging when visit my partner, no AC option at her flat). Cost me a fortune in Starbucks..

From around 40% (or so) it will take an hour to get near to 85% - early charging heats the battery to speed things up - I've done it at 2C (and below) - you'll be fine really and in a better position when using the target EVSE as a specific charging location (this is crucial otherwise pre-conditioning won't engage) - where details of the EVSE e.g. speed, number of bays etc are displayed.

Now that the many 'missing' EVSE locations are now listed I will give this a shot to see the difference in speed of charging with pre-conditioning (this will be my first in 16 months!).
