I just got my Taycan and love it so far. living in the northeast I am worried how my RWD Taycan will do in snow and slush. I currently have the 21 inch wheels. Should I get a 20 inch winter set? Or just buy 21 winter tires for the existing rs spyder wheels?

I'd recommend finding a set of 19s.
  • Snow tires are cheaper/easier to find
  • More "meat" to handle the wintertime pot holes
  • More aero to help with the winter range loss

+1 ... while I think, that 20" for winter tires is a good compromise.

Here’s a poll / thread I posted about swapping tires vs full wheel sets. Most people who do anything other than all seasons just have two wheel sets that they swap between. Often the dealership can store them for you.

In my case I went with an OEM 20” winter wheel set. @TaycanCook is right that 19s are best for resilience against potholes, but if you are accustomed to the look of 21” RS Spyder wheels, 19” is going to look strange. 20” is a good compromise and has some decent looking rim options among the OEM sets.

IMO if you are going to be daily driving your RWD through the US Northeast winter, you definitely want to get a winter set for traction and safety.

Do you think I can buy any porsche wheel/tire set? or it needs to be Taycan specific?

I would love this! Alas, my dealer does not provide this service. Since we have had relatively mild winters, I simply have not driven very much when it has been cold or there was a lot of snow. I may bite the bullet and replace my summers (20") with snow tires when it is time and buy a set of 21" for the new summers. I just need to find a place to store them. I hate the idea of storing them at my house, however.

Should definitely be Taycan specific. You need compatibility: NF0 tires constructed to deal with the immense torque and braking of the Taycan, an extremely heavy vehicle. You can use the Porsche Tequipment online search to filter for compatible sets. The parts department at your dealer can advise of availability. Last year, availability was a challenge going into and throughout the winter.

@KensingtonPark Ask your dealer for options - perhaps they can recommend a third party. You could find another dealer who can do it, even if you don’t switch to that dealer for normal service. In my case, my dealer does not offer storage, but is willing to pickup and return the swapping wheel sets.
This winter, I’m thinking I shall gear up to do the swap myself.

All of these replies are right and reasonable, but I found out that Pirelli makes winters for Aston Martins that fit the Taycan CT 21" rims. I can't stop thinking about doing that even though it is illogical

I used all season 21's when I had my car. Traction was fine. I'd be more concerned about range in the cold......
