As I wrote US cars USED to consume about 25kW.

I learned this around 50 years ago when looking into why most European cars at the time didn’t have A/C at all and found the Mopar A/C pump peak power requirement was more than the total power of a then current Mini , ie, if you revved a Mini up to peak power then engaged a Mopar A/C unit the engine would stall.

I also wrote they will be more efficient now, which they will, and makers are less extravagant now too. In any case I am sure the average power of any A/C unit doesn’t need to be anything like the maximum, obviously.

The range calculator shows approximately a 30% reduction in city range between A/C off and on at 30C ambient fwiw.
The figure I mentioned above (and confirmed by other folks), ~2KW, makes total sense. My rough calculation was the car losing ~6 miles per hour, which at low average speeds can easily reduce your range by 30%. If your average speed is 20mph, for each 14 miles you drive you actually use 20 miles of range. 6 is 30% of 20 :) Notice that in the range estimator, if you set it to all motorway, the range hit from AC is much, much smaller (and actually, the hotter the ambient temp, the MORE range the estimator shows even with AC ON).

A decade of driving EV's here, every car has an approximate miles per hour of range lost due to HVAC (different for heating vs. cooling, and somewhat dependent on set vs. ambient temps).

I consistently get more than 250 miles...I think if I charged to 100 percent I feel like I am eek out 290 miles maybe 300?

My app is not loading total but here's my pic of this last week which is for me representative of 90 percent of driving i do as it is my commute to work

After the software update is when I noticed a big difference...prior to that I was hanging around 3.5-4.x mi/kwh

AZ weather. The hotter it is outside, the more range you will get. Even the Porsche range estimator shows it.

Just reflecting on this I am not sure a car doesn't need quite a lot more power than a domestic room to cool.
The air itself has a low specific heat so its volume is not a big part of the requirement, but the ratio of the area of window to wall is much more favourable in room than than a car.

Walls are much better insulated then a metal car body.

A car is often in full sun radiation, most domestic rooms have a limited amount of their surface area radiated on (and have the much superior insulation over most of their surface v almost none).

Anyway, however big it is Porsche's data shows a considerable loss of range due to A/C in town (A/C Eco is massively better)
I fully agree with you that driving in a city in 30 degrees heat will considerably increase the consumption compared to A/C off. I have no idea what the Porsche range calculator use as average speed in their different scenarios, City vs Motorway driving etc, but I guess that would also be a variable depending on legal speed limits and country?

Range will differ quite a lot, but the interesting piece is that you could estimate how much the A/C consumes ( including cabin fans, cooling fans, pumps etc)

I just reflected on an example of city driving and if I use the range figures from the calculator plus my own assumption of an average speed in the city driving of 15 mph (probably very high but…), I came to the following.
Battery useable 83.7 kWh

83.7 / 195 = 43 kWh/100 miles
83.7 / 276 = 30 kWh/100 miles.

Assuming the average speed is 15 mph it would take 6.7 hours to drive 100 miles

So the two consumption figures above would give ( excuse my use of non standard power denominations)

43 kWh per 100 miles / 6.7 hrs = 6.4 kWh/h with A/C on
30 kWh per 100 miles / 6.7 hrs = 4.5 kWh/h with A/C off.

From that I would conclude that the A/C is estimated at 2 kW roughly.

Sorry but we are getting away from the original question, apologise for that!

2022 4S Cross turismo with 35000km. In summer 20-25C, getting 350-360km 85% or 410-425km 100%. I’m satisfied with this range. Cold Canadian winter 0-10 minus C after the software update in 2022 was only getting disappointing 270-280km 85% or 320-330km 100%. I get the feeling after software update in 2022, summer range was improved a little but winter range was worse by a lot compared to before software update. Anyone else observe this?

RWD, getting 215-220 miles at 85%, implying 250-260 miles at 100% when I leave the house in the morning at ~60F temps. This is driving in normal A/C, normal driving modes, and low ride height all the time.

Pretty satisfied with the range, since the meter is pretty accurate from what I can tell (after long day trip, range when i get home is pretty close to what I started with minus the distance driven). When it gets to ideal temps (~75F ambient), car will show closer to 270 projected miles in normal mode, so I bet it would be close to 285 or so in range mode.

In our cool, but relatively mild winters (~50F in morning), range is 235-240 miles. So overall a 250-260 mile average seems pretty accurate and reasonable given no special attention paid to driving in an efficient manner

That’s not your data since inception, that’s your last trip. Select the tab to the right - ‘Total’.

BTW, based on usable battery capacity, 2.9 miles per kWh equals a total range of 241 miles.

Here is my total trip data since bought the car....i had kids in the last year so i have been idling at work more frequently LOL. I didnt notice the units were different so thats why i probably didnt make sense. Pic on right is when I drive literally like a model citizen like i am now because my tires are at 2mm and the PS4 are on back order

That’s what I expected. Your average speed is 27mph. Hence the better range.

Though the consumption figures are nonsense. They massively overstate reality. Mine indicates a range 15% higher than what I get in reality.

Guys, I feel the conversation gets a bit blurred.
the question is specifically about a 4s PB+, the undiscussed variable being 20/21” wheels, or heatpump.
touting range calculator numbers or RWD’s are only muddying the waters more.

These values don't extrapolate to the range value quoted.

Consumption of 3.2 miles / kWh equates to 268 miles max whereas consumption of 2.9 miles / kWh equates to 243 miles.

To obtain 300 miles of range consumption would need to be 3.6 miles / kWh.

PB+ has 83.7 KW (net) usable battery and not 93.4 KW

Hi guys,

What is the range you get with %85 battery for Taycan 4S Performance plus in normal mode with city driving?
Taycan 4s ST with the big battery and heat pump. I do mostly city driving and now in the summertime with 20 degrees I get around 370km of range.

My 21 Taycan 4S indicates 390KM at 85% and is regularly achieving range and consumption figures indicating a max range of 480-460KM, car is 20 months old with 17,000km completed. These are summer time numbers winter loses at least 25% range
