Recommendation? EV wall unit 7.4kw?

Hi, looking for a good EV home charger unit for a 2022 Taycan Turismo, would like to keep it below £400 ($550) as we’ve relocated with work and rented out our home so are now renting (leasing) ourselves, landlord has said it’s ok and I’ve found a electrician who can install for £185.

Any recommendations? Thanks in advance, I’m based in the UK.

If you are renting, you could just have a 32a socket installed, then use the Porsche mobile charger (or any other mobile charger) then you can keep it and use it elsewhere. The PMC that came with my Taycan even included a wall mount. (Only challenge is the potential for someone to nick it, but you can just unplug it completely when not in use).

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking about that and also have all the Porsche Charger with the 3 pin industrial style socket. Isn’t there supposed to be some sort of fire hazard that Porsche advised?

The problems were with the US version. UK is fine, electrician fits a commando socket for it. I have one in the garage and a Hypervolt charger outside, both work well.

Around that from dead flat for the big battery, but you will usually be starting with something in there unless you are a lot braver than me

Put a proper Type 2 wall unit in rather than a socket. Look for one that will integrate with a second unit (for load sharing) if you may have a second EV in the future. Perhaps also one that you can set to only supply power in cheaper off peak periods (you can do that on the car too but the chargers usually have better software).

Zappi seem popular. Andersen look smart on the front of your house. I have 2x Easee One which are very popular in Norway (huge EV take up) but in the UK less well known.

To avoid messing around with plugs get one where the wall end of the Type 2 cable is locked in place (physically or by software) then you can just hang the coiled cable on a hook when not in use.

edit: I see you are renting, so cheap may be better— depends on how long you will be there and whether you can keep it when you leave. Maybe get the landlord to pay for a proper one?

Because you are renting there is a £350 government grant towards your evse.
If you are with Octopus they will sort it out for you, I went for a Ohme home pro and that has worked perfectly with my Taycan.

In the year I’ve had my car I was 6 months on a 32A socket before moving to the Ohme.

I wouldn’t go back to 32A because:
1. Ohme fully integrates with car, so you don’t have to use any of the car timers.
2. On the correct tariff, I only get charged 7p / kWh whenever the car is charged. This is saving me £50-£75 per week. So the Ohme is easily paying for itself

That’s good to know. Been using these public chargers at Sainsbury’s and it’s 10 x times that 77p.

Maybe something like the go-e charger. You can take it with you easily if you move again.

Note that you don't need a special charger controlled by the electricity provider, to get cheap rates. The forum has many posts from people who struggle to integrate the provider's app with the charger and/or car. Simpler, for example, is EON Next.Drive which gives cheap off-peak electricity from 0000-0700. (Note that all off-peak tariffs have higher rates for peak times, so unless you have solar and a battery, you'd need to do the sums carefully.)

I’m with Eon - when they first announced their EV tariff the peak rate was well over standard rate so it didn’t work for me. They changed and I’m on their EV tariff and it’s saving me over £ 50 / month and I don’t drive that far. Although it’s called their EV tariff the very low rate is for any electricity consumed within the set hours.

Their standard tariff today seems to be 26.4p / kw. The EV one I am on is 7p between 12 and 6am and peak is 24.2p / kw fixed for 1 year. The standing charge is only £ 1 / month more !

I think our real savings are from setting the dishwasher and washer dryer during the cheap rate As well as the car.
