Hello all,

Wasn’t there a rumor a while ago that alongside side Macan EV they will be introducing a smaller sedan in order to compete with Model 3 as well as the BMW 4 series? This was supposed to start at around 70k instead of the current 86k. Just curious to how that would be like. If it is true and assuming they can somehow maintain the same range or increasing it, I might switch. I love my Taycan but I don’t need as big of a sedan. Unless their cheaper Taycan is the electrified Cayman but given that the rumor suggests a brand new model sedan, it would be interesting to see. Anyone heard more info about this rumor?

I've heard the same rumor but not substantiated. If true it's probably a long way out given no one has seen any prototypes driving around, unlike EV macan. I kind of doubt it though, since porsche never made a smaller ICE sedan. Most consumers are going suv, and macan is by far the best selling porsche model. So business case for smaller sedan is low IMO

Perhaps you’re right, it’s just that the model 3 and i4 series are really not in the same league as a Taycan. Taycan is a model S competitor. If they want to capture that younger audience that wants a smaller sedan then it might not be too bad. Though you are right in that who even knows how that will fit into Porsches portfolio of cars.

There was the Pajun (PANamera JUNior) and the Pajun-E rumoured. No idea if and when these cars will come.

Look at what else is being launched within the VAG universe for clues.

Porsche has any platform available the VAG network to choose from (many small vehicle platforms when considering their global offerings). So far their volume has increased substantially when introducing lower priced models. They will have to balance volume vs prestige. Personally, I didn’t like that they introduced the 4cyl Macan. Those things are everywhere and not very Porsche like. They should have saved that space for Audi and VW.

There's no point to launch a smaller sedan to compete with Model 3 or Bmw 4 for 3 reasons:
- it ll not be compétitive. I had a model 3 perf and had to buy a 4S not too loose to much power ;)
- it ll eat sales to the Macan
- it would insta kill a future Audi (EV) 4, 5, 6 sedan which would be not nice as they are in the same group

I don’t think it will eat into the sales of Macan because SUV vs smaller sedan. People who needs SUV will still buy the SUV but people who don’t need it won’t buy an SUV just because it’s cheaper than Taycan. I am also not sure it will eat into the sale of Audi just because it’s Porsche, it will still be expensive. If it starts at 75k, that means you probably won’t find any under 85-90k starting price, after tax it will still be a 6 figure car. Plus Audi doesn’t seem to be releasing their RS series electric anytime soon and I can only imagine a smaller Taycan to into the sales of an RS series car rather than their normal luxury sedan series.

I'd rather they worked on an electric 911, but can't see it until they're forced to somehow

A smaller Taycan would need to be significantly smaller to justify its existence (and the Taycan is only a large car on the outside). Current battery tech packaging would necessitate such a design having a more SUV-like shape.
Also, has Porsche shown any interest in expanding their product line and production volume to offer medium-sized saloons?

Since when did VAG worry about "overlap"?

What about the e-tron GT RS?

It has been rumoured for a long time.

Years ago there were rumors that Porsche was going to introduce on a sedan based on the same Audi MLB platform as the macan. It would’ve been a Porsche version of the Audi A4/5 essentially. I think the taycan essentially took the place of that car in the lineup and it got cancelled. With the upcoming cars based on the VWgroup PPE platform it certainly opens up the possibility of a smaller Porsche EV sedan but I’m kind of doubtful it woukd happen given the overlap with all the other VW group products (including the macan EV)

I agree, but I do think that the sales pitch for developing a new sedan in general is just low. Different segment I know, but Ford killed off all of their cars, with exception of the Mustang. Comparing Model 3 and Model Y, in 2021, the first full year after release, the Model Y already outsold the 3 161k to 121k. Also sales for the 3 dropped from 167k in 2020 to 121k in 2021.

I think Taycan sales will drop significantly after the EV Macan is released, just as the Cayenne massively outsells the Panamera. The Panamera really just serves as the flagship commuter vehicle, where all the latest luxury tech appears first for Porsche, vs. being a sales driver. I expect the Taycan will serve as that going forward as well

Reality is while us enthusiasts do prefer sedans and coupes, the majority of people want crossover type vehicles. In 2021, the Macan and Cayenne together sold more than the rest of Porsche's lineup combined, with the Cayenne outselling Panamera almost 5:1. The EV Macan will be the home run that Porsche is looking for, in order to sell to the masses. It's probably a better use of Porsche's resources to focus on a larger EV SUV, IE EV Cayenne next instead of another sedan. Of course, Porsche being a sports car brand, will still focus on the EV Cayman, as they understand their brand image and core enthusiasts still want sports cars. But they also have to balance that with what actually pays the bills, which is what the average wealthy person, who likes a slightly sporty car to daily, wants

Totally forgot about their GT RS. Though it would be interesting to see how the electrified 718 is going to compare to the Taycan

yup that’s a very fair point. The key difference for me is that a 718 isn’t a 911..so it’s purely an emotional rather than rational thought
