Long rant short coz I'm heavily sleep deprived while doing long road trips across Europe for the summer.

Starting to get very annoyed with, "currently only available with j1.2" for software only features.

I get that there might be subtle variations that might require recompile for different hardware or architecture, but it is 100% upselling fuckery to expect me to buy a new car to play a fucking youtube video on the passenger screen or to install custom plug & charge certs from a 3rd party.

If your software stack is such a mess that you can't deploy something so simple across the different lines, get out of the infotainment system business.

And you know they will fuck both j1.1 and j1.2 owners when carplay ultra is released.

I'd understand if they made a new engine, or maybe new battery technology, but getting fucked coz they want to upsell me on the software after 1 year, basically guarantees that I will never trust them again.

As a j1.1 owner I can’t think of a single j1.2 only “software feature” that I give a toss about. They’re all gimmicks and I’m glad I missed out on the now compulsory speed warning / lane warning ADAS crap that comes with new cars!

I requested my Porsche dealership last week to update my J1.1 PCM to version .4360
My request was denied, as Porsche will not authorize the update on J1.1

Yes,
for road-trips this update would have been very useful to me.
No,
it is not pissing me off, as I knew from the beginning, going from Tesla to Porsche will put me in a whole different hardware AND software world.

One is very positive, one is very negative, but I decided, the positive one is way more important to me.

Why would you expect newer model features on older models? Porsche never advertised any such capability. If that is something that you want, I believe Tesla offers it, as may a few of their competitors. Whatever car you buy, do your research first, having owned 4 Teslas over a decade, the OTA updates are not all they're cracked up to be either. All systems have their advantages and disadvantages, everyone should pick the one which fits them best.

Why would you expect newer model features on older models?
Because that's what the present market delivers :) Discussion that we have had for about 2 years at this point.

Again, other manufacturers do it. Porsche is very free to not do it, and proceed to lose customers... as they are in pretty much every market :)

If they can't deliver on the market demands, then they may as well go out of that market.

And no, it's not just Tesla offering it, it's Lucid, Hyundai, Kia, Volvo, all the Geely brands and BYD brands, Xiaomi, Rivian and preatty much most EV cars.

It's especially bad, since the hardware is the same. So it really is just unwillingness to do a software campaign.

People learned to expect on a 250.000-300.000 chf car at least as much software support as a 250chf android phone made by a chinese company, because, again, that's what everyone delivers. My coffee machine got more useful updates than my taycan.

There's even regulations in place for some products, like smartphones, that relay on software:
For smartphones and tablets, the EU has proposed that manufacturers provide at least five years of security updates and three years of operating system (OS) updates.
And now they are discussing chaging those numbers to 5 and 7 years; and for cars to have security updates at a minimum once every 3 years.

The regulations will catch up soon, for EVs also. Will porsche be able to deliver?

So why would people not expect new features on older models? PHones do it, tablets do it, fridges do it, coffee machines do it, blenders do it, vacuums do it, cameras do it, everything run by software does it... unless it has a porsche logo on it.

I did; Porsche promised OTA updates, they actually made a very big deal out of it.

Still waiting for those PCM OTA updares :)

So again, why should people not expect it, when even Porsche advertised it, only to later not deliver on it?

In fact, here:
Porsche Taycan starting to get pretty fucked off about software. IMG_5389

“Always up to date” - a false statement, as Porsche decided to not release the update to j1 cars, despite it being developed and avaliable; since 10 months.

“Fewer workshop visits” - another false statement, as it is so out of ordinary for any update to be OTA, as advertised, and most are in the service

So why should people not expect those new features, when porsche says to expect them?

Because that’s what Porsche promised me when I ordered my J1.1 Taycan Turbo. Updates and new features were a major concern for me as I new how fast EV technology progresses.

I was assured that this would not be a problem, yet here we are.

It’s no different to the latest iOS not working on older models of iPhone. It’s simply not compatible.

People need to accept that modern cars are no longer motor vehicles with computers in, they are computers with wheels and suspension. Software cant be continuously improved AND fully compatible with old hardware.

Ios 26 works just fine on my iphone 13; from 4 generations ago.

What are you on about?

Or are you comparing j1.1 to iphone 6 and j1.2 to iphone 16? Eitherway, horrible comparision, as apple offers updates to older hardware for up to 10 years. In fact iPhone 6 got 8 years of the latest IOS software; and it still gets security updates.

Also, taycan j1.2 has exact same computer as j1.1. There is no case of "not compatible".

It's like saying iphone 6 can't get the updates from iphone 6 plus - despite identical hardware, ridiculous.

I originally had the same take, but it's more the principle of it. I paid £180k for a car whose native interface harkons back to my dad's 2001 Mercedes infotainment, and gets less software updates than my fucking blender.

I love the way the car drives, but the 30k Renault I recently rented absolutely obliterated the porsche in everything "technology" based except charging speed.

Lane keeping, cameras, app integration, route planning, even the air conditioner worked better.

Meanwhile porsche is sending me a letter twice a year assuring me that the car definitely won't burn down my house, but also I shouldn't park it in an apartment building, and any pyrotechnic damage totally isn't their fault. Also the cameras and "collision detection" throws a fucking fit if I get within a meter of the pavement.

Currently I'm eyeballing a new car because I'm leaving the UK, and I was heavily debating trading for a left hand drive used taycan or a mecan, but the ludicrus nickle and diming, deliberate lack of support on the software side, and kneecapping of existing customers to upset a car that is only cosmetically different has left me with a bad taste for thr brand. Its a piss take for the cost.

Here's my issue with this line of logic.

Why then, don't they just make the upgrade across the line at the same time? My J1.1 and a band new j1.2 are running the exact same logic boards, processors, memory, and displays. There is literally zero technical reason for these trivialities to not be cross compatible.

They do it because they know customers want this, and they hope you'll look over the fact that they failed to deliver on their promise to keep the cars updated and are happy to pay more to get the incremental upgrades that other brands get for free.

Again if it was hardware bound, a new processing unit, new engines, new cameras, new anything, it would maybe be acceptable that my old car is less functional. They literally just slapped a new piece of plastic on the front and went, "oh no, this one is completely different".

I want my car to be maximally functional, it's a god damn cope to excuse this behavior as acceptable.

My J1.1 has the EXACT same hardware of a J1.2.

This is MBA fuckery.
