The car industry is racing to replace Chinese code - Wall Street Journal

How Chinese is your car? Automakers are racing to work it out.

Modern cars are packed with internet-connected widgets, many of them containing Chinese technology. Now, the car industry is scrambling to root out that tech ahead of a looming deadline, a test case for America’s ability to decouple from Chinese supply chains.

New U.S. rules will soon ban Chinese software in vehicle systems that connect to the cloud, part of an effort to prevent cameras, microphones and GPS tracking in cars from being exploited by foreign adversaries.

It's a theory. Let's see actual customer experience with BYD, Xiaomi et al. Would be the first bug-free software.

Every always worried about people getting your “data….”

Almost all of it is being used to send you advertising for things you are more likely to like.

Alternative? You still get the ads, they just aren’t sure whether to pitch you baby diapers or adult diapers.

Not sure what you are referring to. Could you elaborate?
DHS is gathering local license plate reader data and doing ICE things including detaining and disappearing US citizens with that data. Cities around here are now shutting those readers down.

I don't trust such an incompetent government not to make a mistake with me or any other American. Thus I don't trust them with any of my data.

I am sure if anyone is assigned to monitoring me at China's intelligence agency, they will be enthralled to hear me singing along to Soul music and driving to the shops (again) today.
Possibly even talking to my wife about yesterday's controversial goal at Liverpool v Man City, before going to see her parents new shed.

Its all riveting stuff!!
Maybe I should liven it up?......

Make a trip out and park up near an Air Force Base and watch the planes take off and land for a few hours, then drive round London and park near a number of foreign embassies and then MI6's office, just to add some intrigue?
😄

True for the person, but the US gov is not doing this because it's what the people want. They're doing this because they're worried about China having any sense of power over the US from an intelligence perspective, be it economic competition or wartime security.

Not sure what this could possibly have anything to do with China knowing what radio stations you listen to in your car.

They may want this in theory, but it’s hard to pull off when we buy $500 billion in goods from them each year.

I think this is more about political optics than any actual danger. That said, there are actual technological dangers from a cyber warfare standpoint and it’s well known that China has an actual plan if that ever happens.

So maybe it’s theoretically possible that they could access our cars and “shut them down” in case of war. I just don’t think that exists currently. This is more of a trust issue, or really mistrust in writing our software code.

Great! My kids are growing up in a world where even cars are political. I’d better start saving now so they’ll still be able to afford Porsche Connect later. Imagine the price after March!

Wonder if that wouldn't attract MI5's interest more than the Chinese.....

This is a very serious topic, but it probably better belongs in forums devoted to such issues. Your physical movement, where you go and with whom you associate physically, without the need of text messages, are obviously very valuable pieces of information to those of nefarious intent, not that there could be any such persons. Let’s see . . . You’re a scientist at a government lab and regularly take off on vacations to warmer climates, maybe even the same one each year. That information provides an opportunity to establish contact with the traveler “off the reservation“ so to speak, without any colleagues knowing. We could go on, with better examples. Perhaps these speculations are better handled by M. John LeCarre than me.

They’re going to get that information from your cell phone (built in China) not your car.

I don’t think the Chinese government has any interest tracking where I drive or vacation.

But even in the case of the government scientist, let’s assume the Chinese government tracks the car movements of that person. To what end?

In the extremely unlikely event of all out war with China, I’m guessing anyone of importance wouldn’t use any product in which they could be tracked by “the enemy” anyways.

It just seems like much ado about nothing.

Fun fact- every car manufacturer built in China has to share all obtained data with the Chinese government by law.

What do they do with that data? 🤷‍♂️
