Hey, Guys,
I am from the mid-south of USA and the only dealership close to home can not have an allocation for 4 months. So, I recently ordered the basic model RWD from a nearby city 200 miles away. I still have two more weeks to make changes for the configurations. I have several questions and I do appreciate your help. By the way, this is my first EV/Porsche.
  • Dealer service: From the forum, it seems Taycan does have some problems (PCM, connection, charging, etc) and needs to work with dealership a lot. My car is ordered from a nearby city 200 miles away. It would be very inconvenient to go there for service. How easy it would be if I do all the services (warranty, repair, etc) in the dealership close to home?
  • Adaptive air suspension: There are speed bumps in my city. Do I really need the adaptive air suspension to pass speed bumps? By the way, I ordered the 20 inch tires for the car.
  • Charing at Electrify America. There are ccs 150 kw, 350 kw and ChAedMO 50 kw. Which one to use to get the maximum charging speed 22.5 minutes? In addition to the default setting on basic model, do I need to install the 150 kW 400volt charger support?
  • Charging at home. Should I just install the AC 240v 50-amp NEMA 14-50R (receptacle) in the garage? Anyone does the DC 50kw charging at home? Per my sales, this one is much faster.
Thank you very much.

You probably want to read this article to get more familiar with EV terms and concepts in general. https://medium.com/@the.ev.newbie/what-everyone-should-know-before-they-buy-an-ev-1ba9095c15ba

I bought my Taycan 1100 miles from my home. I don’t have any issues getting it serviced by my local dealer.

I don’t use my air suspension for speed bumps but I use it a lot for unpaved roads and parking lots outside of Austin TX. There are a lot of places where I lift the car to be safe.

Charging at home will be via AC, not DC.

There are a lot of threads here about DC charging that you should read to understand how the EV will charge and what rates you can expect.

Thank you two so much. It is very helpful.

Hirschaj: your article is perfect for a newbee like me.

I will install the air suspension and get AC charging at home.

One last question to clarify:
charging at electrify america: do I need to install the 150 kW 400volt charger support in order to get the maxium charging speed?

Nope, you’ll get full performance at EA chargers without needing the 150kW/400V option. IF Tesla follows through on refitting Superchargers in the US with CCS connectors and allowing other EVs to use them, the 150kW/400V option would be useful.

Re your questions about charging:
Read this thread, particularly the first post: https://www.taycanforum.com/forum/threads/us-over-the-top-the-well-equipped-ev-home-garage…for-those-that-wish-to-over-do-it-….2343/#post-31739

Watch this youtube video about Taycan charging:

You probably will want to install EV charging equipment and an outlet at your home. There are other threads on this forum that cover the details. Note that as opposed to buying Porsche charging equipment for your home, there are non-Porsche options. Some posts in this forum report concerns about Porsche EVSE units overheating. For reviews of EV supply equipment (EVSE) see this youtube channel :https://www.youtube.com/c/StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney

If you are already getting adaptive air suspension I highly recommend you add rear axle steering. You can live without it for sure, but its a big car and I've found it very useful. Search on that topic for more info on the forums.

If it helps, you are not required to service your car at the dealership you purchased from. I've purchased two of my cars from out of state including my Taycan. Your local Porsche dealership service Dept should be capable to doing basic service on your car.

I have never had an issue servicing any of my P cars at other than the selling dealership. My guess is that as EV's become a greater percentage of the Porsche sales needing less service, other than selling dealers will welcome you with open arms.

IMHO, adaptive air suspension is one of those options that really makes sense. The ride is softer when you want it. The ride height helps with range and handling. Simply, I prefer it.

Generally, you will see faster charging times at the 350kW. The 150kW are slower but still satisfactory for road trips. You are lucky in that when you are specifying your build, there is a plethora of content that you can access for an informed decision.

Home charging is generally AC using a 50 amp circuit and a 14-50R receptacle. The challenge will be to decide if you want to use a GFI circuit breaker, which tend to cause unwarranted tripping of the breaker. I believe that the NEMA 2020 code requires it but some towns and folks don't follow the 2020 code and are still using the 2017 which does not. My personal decision (for my second home) was not to install the GFI breaker as I want to know my car will be charged in the morning. My condo 50 amp service uses the GFI breaker and it has been tripping off about 5-10 percent of the time for unknown reasons.

Good luck and I encourage you to become educated, you have an opportunity to learn while many of us earlies adopters did not have the content access that exists today.

RWD is the best! Coils are fine for speed bumps in fact better. South East London is littered with them and raised traffic calming ramps. The coils are fine and the car high enough. You are not racing, it's a RWD, so stick with coils. We have these 3 square bumps across the road and since the car is so wide if you line it up right you can hammer straight over and it goes between the wheels! The only reason for air is if you have an awkward drive to enter or exit.
