Using both handles on a single station?

I pulled up to an EA station yesterday, one of the connections on it was in use by an E-Tron. I grabbed the other one and the gentleman using it told me only one works at a time on each "pump."

Is that accurate? If so, why do they have two cables (same connection type) on one pump?
