I think the market, including us, has started to come to terms with a grim realization about EV ownership: at some point the car will die, and you will not be able to revive it, because it’s source of power is, in effect, terminally ill. In fact, you will probably have to part with the car long before the battery’s death, because your effective range is no longer acceptable. Who would buy such a car from you? Unlike an ICE car, you can’t have cylinders reworked, say, and have some repairs (at acceptable cost) making the car worth keeping and driving. The EV industry has to come up with a way to restore the power source at something like a reasonable price, and $40,000 for a replacement is not a reasonable price. At present, we are not be able to overcome this inherent EV limitation, which will hurt even new car prices as the market comes to realize the short half-life of these vehicles. A mainstream, practical way to restore the power source must be devised.
A lot of what I have read would seem to contradict some of these points.

Longer term history with Tesla would seem to suggest EV batteries holding up well - even though it's now older EV technology. Current models should be improved further.

Typical (unbiased) article I have read on the subject:

This may be true for Tesla but not Porsche. Battery failure on this vehicle is way too high for it to be acceptable. I am one of the ones that had a $50k plus repair of the battery not even a replacement. Vehicle only had 20,000 miles on it. Luckily it was CPO and still under battery warranty. Even in my small dealer almost every time I visit there is one in the shop getting its battery changed. I love the car but don’t have high hopes for full ev adoption until these repair costs come crashing down.

Tesla is ……. miles ahead of what Porsche is doing in the EV world….. the software overall is far superior

Had lots of mid life crisis cars but the Taycan has given me the best smile every time I drive it just love it
The best thing about mid-life crises is that we can stay in crisis mode for such a long long time and buy lots of cars to help us through our trauma! My next mid-life crisis car will for sure be the 718 EV (hopefully with something close to 1000 HP), and who knows, maybe even the rag-top version to evoke even more sympathy from my wife.

but am planning to try one on Sunday.
It was badly signposted on a busy road and whilst I did eventually find it I had already driven by twice and turning round was a pain so I didn't try it.
I had enough charge to get home anyway.

So thus far after 15 months of ownership I have managed a discount charge a total of zero times.

Lot of great points.

not sure how many of you are also Tesla owners. I was one of the first Model S owners and currently have a Plaid X.

have also owned an i8 and an i3.

quite honestly, it’s funny how everyone touts the technological advancement of teslas. Let’s be real. The ONLY advancement my 2023 Model X plaid has over my Taycan GTS is self closing doors. The FSD is crap. Never use it. The Adaptive cruise control is no better than the taycan. Phantom braking all the time. The Tesla battery gets no more range than my GTS. I charge it to 330. Next day I wake up on the morning it’s 290. The day after 260. Sure the Tesla feels faster, but at the expense of feeling like the wheels will fly off. i don’t even have front parking cameras on the X for gawd’s sake. I feel like I’ve gone backwards in time with the Tesla. All these promised features that don’t work. It’s mind boggling how folks tout the tech in teslas.

back to the point, the GTS is beautiful. It runs amazing. It’s built like no other car on the road. There’s nothing I miss when I’m driving it. The only thing that really pisses me off is when my wife blocks the driveway with the X and I’m trying to back out of the garage with the taycan.

That happened to me a few times as well ?I also have a Gentian Blue ST with 21 RS Spyder, it is just a beauty. On top of the curved shapes that I love on the Taycan, I like how shiny the color is and how it changes depending on the light.

One confession: I always park my car at the lowest suspension level so I enjoy looking at it when I approach it. Am I the only one?? ?
OMG I thought it was just me! Sometimes on a sloped kerb I really have to debate hard whether to ground my doors or save them and look at the ugly raised height …

Be careful with the lowest chassis setting! A number of us have bottomed out on speed bumps and curbs...requiring the side/front/rear skirts to be replaced. I agree these are beautiful, high performance vehicles...I have a 2020 Mamba Green 4S, and have had no problems over the past 3.5 years of ownership. I bought an 8 year Porsche insurance policy to cover possible problems and plan to keep the vehicle to 2030. I am ready to order the Cayman E as soon as it is available.
For this exact reason I recently had to have the underside battery protector replaced ?

I simply can’t at times help but stare at my own car. What a creation. Hats off Porsche. Even after all these years, no other electric car excites me such, turns heads.
This is a great post and I have found new joy/love by changing from turbo aero to mission e wheels after 3 years - I find the endless “are you going to change now the new one has been released” and “look how much it’s depreciated” threads bizarre - there was never any guarantee and it is what it is (great problem to have) - we are so lucky to have this wonderful piece of engineering just enjoy!!! Unless of course you are a seller in which case fair enough :(

Absolutely spot on…
Moved to Taycan from Tesla and shocked at the prices from shell and BP (for example). Charge planning is so complex vs Tesla I only use Taycan for journeys less than 150 return and use BMW petrol car for long journeys. Above post is a great summary of the issues.

Same here...for really long trips I have continued to default to my Cayenne.
Once the charging network in the U.S. is in better shape, I will venture further,
