Okay guys so have a dash cam installed in my other car (Carrera S) after someone backed into it a month after purchase and wondering if i should to the same for my new Taycan CT. Has ony one done this as a DITY or had it done professionally? Curious as to if so and if someone has done it..how difficult was it and/or how complicated? Costs? Thanks for sharing...

absolutely yes, install cameras, front and rear. unless you are skilled in installing electronics I would use a pro to do the install. stay away from the porsche camera.

Yes, I have Thinkware U1000 with radar module front and back cameras installed by a professional. Better to have it and not needed, than the other way around.

4k Blackvue front and rear here. Really no harder than any other car to install. Run wires up into headliner, down A-pillar to fusebox by driver's foot.
I knew it!

My installer told me installing on an EV was "special" and charged me extra for it! What a scam

Hmm okay have a Thinkware Q800 Pro in my Carrera S and was thinking the same for the Taycan. But worried that the Dashcam will draw continuous power from the system and affect the Taycan's electronics and battery drain. Any concerns there? Also have the panoramic roof so not sure how much space there is for wires to run up there back to the rear camera. Something tells me an extensive install job to look legit. So yeah having a professional shop tackle it may be best.

Yes didn;t have one installed yet (but purchased) when someone hit my other car prior to having the dashcam installed....so yeah want to get it done professionally I can agree with that.

EV's are "special" as they cost more money (especially EV's like the Taycan), therefore the dashcam is worth more to them, so they are willing to pay more for them. ;)

The only difference between EV and ICE is if the dashcam has some mode to detect an ICE engine being on. Most (probably all) dashcams which have it you can disable it and just record 24/7, with some (like Blackvue) having an additional feature to drop the frame-rate if they detect the car is parked (by using an accelerometer and video content). If you are worried about battery drain, you can connect the dashcam to a switched 12V source, but honestly, that is one of the great things about EV's, a giant battery which can run your dashcam for weeks if needed (your car will continuously top off the 12V battery from the high voltage battery as needed).

PS> I've put 2ch dashcams (front and back) in all our family cars. I treat them like airbags - hope to never need them but if I do I want them there. So far it only came in handy once, but it did save me a $1000 deductible and a hefty insurance hike when another driver hit and totaled my wife's one year old Model S. I love the fact that in the EV's the dashcams runs 24/7 and doesn't shut down after few hours of parking to save the 12V battery from dying.

yes it was a scam on his part, I used to call it the tesla tax when an electrician would note that the installation of a 14-50 line was for a tesla the costs immediately went up.

I don’t believe that this is true, at least with the Taycan. If you are running the dashcam off the 12V unswitched / 24-7, then I’d expect the 12V battery to die in a few hours. The 12V is charged by the high voltage battery when the car is turned back on. Someone else please correct me if you know differently.

I run the Blackvue DR900X Plus 2CH with an external battery for parking mode. The dashcams run off the external battery completely and the external battery is hard wired to the acc switch fuse. As the external battery gets low (around 7% but is configurable), the dashcam turns off. As soon as I turn on the car, the external battery begins charging through the 12V and powers the dashcam again.

Didn't they do a major update at one point to specifically address the 12V getting depleted?

Sadly, I don't have a Taycan yet to verify this in person. I could be wrong, but from everything I read what you describe only applied to the very early vehicles. I also found this on the internet (supposedly from some service manual):
Porsche Taycan Dashcam in a Taycan? 1644296161107

I highlighted the part which caught my attention on this.

That cam has a parking mode, so as long as its wired correctly it should use less power when parked than "dumber" cameras. Using the same my self... Just wired it my self also.. Didnt really take a timer running when I did it my self, so I cant say what would be a fair price. But wiring the rear wire is the worst part of the job.. Front wires takes very little time. But its important also to zip tie up cables in hoops and make sure you dont create vibration sounds by dangling wires. And also taking care that wire cant get damaged by seats etc. so thinking a bit about placement.

Thanks for the info. May try the Thinkware Q800 Pro or Backview 900X next. Both seem to be comparable. :)

I had a Blackvue 2CH DR750S wired into my ipace (by the dealer) from day 1 of having the car. Permanently on and wired into the fuse box. Had it combined with the power magic pro that would switch off the camera if 12V dropped below a certain level (belt and braces (suspenders for US lot)) but the combination parking mode (reduced frame rate/interval and accelerometer detection) in the Blackvue and the HV topping up the 12V meant my 12V never ran down in 3 years. Will see about installing it in the Taycan, video quality more than good enough as tempting as a 4K upgrade would be.
