What charger have you installed at home?

Almost looks like a proper design feature on a post like that @darth_maul_80 great idea!

Our A2 was just installed today, went for Steel grey faceplate and Laurac sand side trim.
Had a household debate about location as I think it’s more convenient on the facade but arguably too visible, so settled on the side of the garage.

Installed in just 2h, as the electric board was just above the charger inside the garage, very straightforward and already had a 100A main fuse.

The app is easy to use and all connected to WiFi etc in 2min, really pleased with this over-engineered milled aluminum box!

so lucky, really wanted to fit a charger inside the garage.

Now we are in a crazy situation (one that I'm sure my wife will use to store more things in our garage)where we have a triple garage but both cars will be outside charging on staggered days so only one part of the garage is in use max!

out of curiosity why didn't you fit it inside the garage apart from the fact it is too pretty a charger to hide away?

So for me it’s really due to the fact that on the left hand side in the garage, it’s storage space for things like tools, roof box, bikes, son’s ride-on, detailing gear or the motorbike. Then on the right it’s broadly OK to park but our 2 cars are in daily use and it’s just inconvenient to manœuvre to fit one in.
Plus I was planning on getting a weekend car in there rather than the Taycan!

It’ll still be convenient to charge as I can park close to the A2 on the driveway, but clearly if I was with a layout as yours with a triple garage I’d probably get the cars in as x1 bay would be enough storage for me!
Will you relocate yours indoors at some point then?
If I fast forward 5-10 years I can also see the value of having an outdoor, readily accessible charging point guests or even contractors can easily borrow, so I also see it a bit as future-proofing the house…

Got an Andersen installed last week. It's a class piece of kit. Very solid, looks great and I love the hidden cable, it's located by our front door so I really didn't want a visible cable when not in use. No-brainer really from that point of view. I'll upload a pic tomorrow when it's bright...

Not sure about relocating it. When we do get to renovating I’m sure there will be some new innovative EVSE so may get that. We may leave the A2 for guest etc. tbh if I could’ve got it in the garage I probably would’ve got the Ohme pro as it’s small but outside I want to compliment the house. As I said to my mates the house costs more than the car so rather the house looked good ?. Though I lie as I do think the car should also look good ?

Spot on - if you want something that looks neat it’s the only choice. Otherwise you have to go untethered to avoid the dangling cable which is less practical. And the customisation options on A2 are really great. Or you can choose not to care which makes life easier (and cheaper ?)

My installer today warned me about the Ohme as he said it was standard in lots of bundles these days - it’s very compact and a sealed unit, so heat doesn’t dissipate well. He had a lot of customers with issues recently and said he was usually advising either Zappi or Andersen…
TBH a neighbour has put a plain industrial socket for his Model X for £150 and it’s doing it’s job. If hidden in the garage I might have gone for a simpler solution too!

Your comment on house > cars reminds me of a few funny sights when I was living in NW2 - tiny terraced houses totally falling apart with some very nice rides parked at the front… made me realise I wasn’t as bad with cars as I (or my wife) thought I was ?

Also an Andersen A2….

though I’m thinking I should have installed a bi-directional charger to use. Future EV that allows me to use the battery on my home.

Up until yesterday, much of the comments on this thread were purely of academic rather than practical interest. However, we have made a significant change to our planning application to include (integrated) solar panels on the roof of our new garage and will be including a Tesla Powerwall for power storage:

The company we have been talking to are also able to fit a Zappi (22kw) charger to take advantage of our 3-phase supply.

If I understand correctly, this set up (if approved by the planners!) will allow me to:
1. take advantage of 'free' electricity via solar power generation
2. store excess electricity generated during the day to reduce consumption at night and/or to charge the car
3. sell back excess electricity to the grid
4. use the powerwall to store cheap rate electricity to minimise peak rate usag,
5. mitigate the impact of power cuts, as experienced recently!

Does anyone have any experience of a similar set-up and can offer any advice?

Does this change what 'e-performance' boxes I need to tick for my Taycan?!

Thanks

It will be a great setup and with a 22kW AC onboard charger and your 3 phase supply you will be cooking on gas!

Not sure if your setup includes a Home Energy Manager (HEM) which balances solar and grid energy (I have no experience of this).

Tempted to advise you get the PMCC as your EVSE given the investment you're about to make overall (small rounding error) and stick within the Porsche eco system (others will disagree but...).

My wife will no doubt be changing her car for an electric car in the next few years, so I want a generic electric charger that can be used for other brands (although I expect she’ll want an Audi!).

Zappi does all you want. I’ve got one and it’s very clever.

As Winge says you’ll need a 22kV onboard charger to take advantage of the 3 phase supply.

PMCC and the HEM is around £1200, Zappi is about £700. I’m not sure if the Porsche setup works in the same way though.

I expect that when you move your Taycan on eventually, you’ll need to include the Porsche charger so you’ll need another, if you do decide to stick to the Porsche setup.

PMCC / PMC+ / any EVSE is generic and will work with all.

Just had an EO mini pro fitted (really neat and small) but won’t get to try it until November / December as still on waiting list for my Taycan CT Turbo mind you just had an invite for Silverstone so must be moving up the list.
