[Ongoing] Road Trip Report - Texas to California

I've done this trip before in my Targa and could always knock it out in two days with Flagstaff as the midpoint.

We'll see how it goes in EV-world! I'm leaving this weekend and will update the thread with each stop, charge stats etc.

Really curious and interested to see how Day 1 or the first half of your trip goes as one of my planned trips is on this exact route to Albuquerque! But TBH equally interested in the stretch to CA

Yeah I will be as detailed as possible! The stretch that worries me most is the Mojave in CA. That's a long dead stretch even for a gas car, much less an EV.

I leave this Saturday; just made the thread ongoing to indicate it will be updated frequently.

For the Mojave stretch, consider taking a little more time in Kingman AZ to charge up to more than 83 percent. There are a couple of antinutritional eating establishments within walking distance that are open for breakfast.
The EA station at Harris Ranch is about 4 miles southeast of the Harris Ranch, which is an enormous cattle farm. If the wind is from the north or northwest, get ready to hold your nose while charging up. The stench gets really bad on I-5 just north of exit 337 regardless of the wind direction unless there's a strong westerly breeze.

I stopped in Bakersfield (charger at a Panera), and Barstow (chargers at Walmart) when going between SJ and Vegas.

You have both stations marked, and it's trivial to get between them in a Taycan, trusting you aren't trying to cut it close charging. The chargers in Barstow are 350kW, and the ones in Bakersfield are 150kW. It's very possible that the charger in Bakersfield will be full, as there aren't many there and it's in town if you get there in the middle of the day.

On I-5 I stop at the charger near Firebaugh that's north of the one you have planned. From there I can get all the way to Sunnyvale, without stopping at the Gilroy Premium Outlets. (which depending on which day you are there may be jammed full)

What wh/mi do you put in ABRP? Do you leave it default or customize?

Not sure if the app you're using factors in hills & mountains. Looking at the leg going into Albuquerque might be a bit of a stretch since you'll be going through the Sandia mountains with an arrival charge of 10%. The Sandias are not like the Rockies, but there are some grades.

Unfortunately I've cancelled the trip. We've had a veterinary emergency this morning and our household is focused on that for the near future.

Thanks - out of nowhere my Jack Russell was not being himself so I took him to the vet this morning. They found alarming bloodwork and referred to me to an ICU.

I can't possibly think of leaving him behind right now.

To close the loop on this thread...my dog ended up developing an auto-immune disorder called IMHA. It was an emergent situation that required immediate ICU care for 5 days (and thousands of dollars.)

Fortunately the quick action worked; he seems to have recovered and is back to his normal energetic self. We have a pharmacy of meds he is on and will be rechecked a few more times to ensure this disease is behind us.

Once I'm convinced this is behind us I will reschedule my trip, restart this thread and have the mods delete this copy which has gone way off topic.

I just wanted to say thanks to all for the kind words, my little buddy is very important to me and we are quite relieved to see him turn this around.
