Ah ok, thought it might be. There seems to be no problem swapping them out for clear ones so is the regulation just that it has to be delivered with them?? All seems a bit pointless (the regulation not swapping them out)
Yep it’s sure is. Some guy up in the ranks must be getting some kind of kickback for enforcing it…who knows. We only have an annual smog test done but that’s it. They’re supposed to check other things like if you have a burnt out bulb but I don’t remember anyone doing that anymore.

Here it is, new side markers. Did I make the right choice switching them out?

Yes - I believe you did - I think it looks much much cleaner.

Just got the very first A stamp Kelly bag co designed by Bugatti for my wife for her birthday last week. Little under 100 years old.

To bad few people seem to know the connection between gran touring and Kelly bags.

Classy. Great decor too.

I see several 2022 without the orange being sold by Porsche Dealers in US, so how come this is a regulation?
I have read on here from a couple members, who says the dealers replaced them for free. I was not that lucky. So I’d say the ones you saw were already replaced by the dealers.

It's just like the front license plate requirement in Texas and many other states. Helps double the sales of the 3M reflective coating!

Lol. Does it really work? I saw a myth buster episode where it proved that it didn’t work against the cameras even at a very high rate of speed…

I think what you saw on mythbusters was them trying to drive so fast that the speed camera would take a picture too late (after your car has passed its field of view) and the speed required to do so was not realistic (I don't remember exactly, but most cars don't come even close to it with their max speed, IIRC it was >200mph).

That said, the coatings also don't work against laser guns almost at all (they reduce the lidar range by a minuscular amount at best from very far, something like 50 feet at 5000ft in ideal conditions). They also don't thwart most modern cameras (toll, red light cam, speed cam). It doesn't stop people from buying such coatings, or darkened license plate covers, probably because most people only look at marketing materials rather than independent testing of the products.

Yeah it’s so long ago I can’t remember exactly. For best results, I use the bait method. When a car wants to pass me, I will gladly move over then follow it. When the lidar hits it up ahead my radar picks it up. I know they say those beams are tiny but mine has picked them up before and escaped while the pole position driver got the “prize”.

I didn't mean an anti-radar/anti-laser plate cover.

I meant 3M (as in the chemical company) has actively engaged in lobbying to require front license plates and replacement of those plates every few years. This is because they make the reflective coating on virtually every license in America:

ah ok. We've always kept our vehicles longer than 7 years, and kept on having to replace the plates but never inquired into why it was required. Interesting fact, and glad now it's no longer required. :like:

I used to play with lidar countermeasures and did some testing when installing mine. "they" are right, chances of you picking up a LEO using lidar on a car front of you are slim - the car in front of you would have to be directly "blocking" your view of the lidar, such that your detector could pick up some light through the windshield or under the car. Note that LEOs are trained to aim at the license plate or headlights, and the laser beams are fairly narrow, so they'd have to be far enough away for the beam to be wide enough to cover the license place and the windshield. Maybe if you ride the other guys bumper, you could get some detection, but in most other cases, your detector is really just telling you that you got clocked with lidar. It could be you got lucky, or maybe the LEO just pulled over the first car he clocked, and clocked you to see if you maybe were going faster than the lead car.
