BUT QUESTION: even if I don't use my Apple Music subscription through PCM (assuming I choose not to pay for a Porsche Connect subscription), is it true that I still can select my phone as a source under media and access my Apple Music that way (while I select it on my phone) without using Apple Car Play?

You do because Porsche will no longer pay for the data connection it is relying on.
Yes but I think OP has an existing Apple Music account which they want to link and access - this will only cease to work if this subscription is then cancelled.

Firstly the car comes with years of free Porsche Connect subscriptions – so not sure why all the concerns about not having it. Every owner has it for at least three years for nothing.

You can mount an iPhone in iPod mode to access the music via the PCM or also via Bluetooth (poor audio quality) if you so wish.

To use built in PCM Apple Music (independent of a phone) you need two active subscriptions:

a] An Apple Music (or Apple One) subscription
b] A Porsche Connect subscription

Loss of either subscription will cause the PCM Apple Music player to stop. Of course with everyone getting three years of Porsche Connect free with the car – the loss of that is not something folks on this forum have really had to deal with yet.

Do you have an existing Apple Music subscription separate to the free one you get with the car?

If yes then you can use that account on any device for as long as you continue to maintain your subscription.

It is this account that you should link to your Porsche Connect ID to use in the car.

To not renew your Porsche Connect services would be a little odd as you will lose much functionality in the car. If you are ok with that then your Apple Music account will not be impacted and will continue to function on other devices as normal.

I had an active Apple Music subscription when I purchased the Taycan – as part of linking my existing Apple Music account with my Porsche ID – they provided three free months to my existing Apple Music subscription – meaning I didn't get a monthly bill for three months after linking the account.

If I had not been an Apple Music subscriber already – I would have gotten six free months.

Nowadays, I subscribe to Apple One plan which bundles all their services (TV, Fitness, Music, Cloud Storage, Email, etc) into one payment. Not sure what would happen if I had that at the time as music isn't explicitly standalone anymore.

Yes that's correct but the confusion I think is that the OP thinks they need to create a new one for use in the car which of course they don't.

To not renew the Porsche Connect services would be somewhat odd.

@tigerbalm, I also subscribe to Apple One services but have not connected Apple Music directly to my Taycan because of Apple ID password security concerns. Currently, I keep the access to Apple services limited to Apple devices and use the two step authentication process to log in. I access Apple Music on the Taycan via CarPlay.

Do you have any concerns with logging into Apple Music directly on your Taycan from a password security standpoint? I'm not concern about someone accessing Apple Music as much as other services such as e-mail and messages.

Thanks

Oh I thought it was 3 months. I just checked and now I think it's 3 years. So I just have to figure out how to use my existing Apple Music account through Porsche Connect.

When you link your account on the porsche.com website, you are actually redirected to Apple’s SSO (single sign on) service. Porsche (nor the PCM) is using your apple password. Apple is basically authroizing a token for the PCM to access the service.

If you are worried about secuirty with your apple logon, then make sure you enable 2 factor security

Got it. So if I play my Apple Music subscription through car play then I can't access playlists from PCM nor set PCM favorites in my Apple Music. Correct?
No, that is not correct.

The Apple Music app in the Taycan mirrors everything that's in your Apple Music library on your Mac or iPhone.

Truth be told, Apple Music via the PCM is redundant with Apple Carplay as the Music app in Carplay is again mirrored in Apple Music on the Taycan. This is admittedly confusing and in my case I use both Apple Music in the PCM and the Music app in Carplay depending on the strength of my cellular signal which is wildly unpredictable and unreliable (thanks ATT!) simply because the PCM “sees” music downloaded on my iPhone which the Apple Music app in the PCM does not as that content is not downloaded onto the PCM.

Is your head spinning yet?

Yes totally. So you're saying that if I don't link my Apple Music account to PCM that I can nonetheless access Apple Music within Apple Car Play through the Media app? I really want to believe that, but it just seems so illogical.

That is correct! You can access and play anything on Apple Music via Carplay. Same goes for Apple Podcasts. I suppose you could consider the PCM’s Apple Music app as something available for someone else to access their own Apple Music library independently of your Carplay Apple Music library. To put it another way, say your kid wants to hear his music--he/she could sign into Apple Music via the PCM and force you to listen to Kanye West or Taylor Swift or BTS and torment you for several hours on a long road trip.
