Headed to DFW airport this morning, scarfing down a McDs sausage McMuffin since I was running behind, stuck below the speed limit behind a UPS truck in an express toll lane and a motorcycle cop pulls me over.

Long story short, he accused me of using a laser jammer and was miffed when I said I had a fully stock vehicle with no jammers or even a radar detector. He fully inspected the drop down sensors on the front bumper by touching them and even bending down on the asphalt to look up at them.

He commented that when he pegged my car his speed gun showed some wonky readout that is typical of radar or laser jamming. I’m not savvy enough about these things to speculate why that occurred, but has anyone else experienced something like this before?

Fortunately it was only a 4 minute delay but definitely a unique experience.

Pulled this photo from suncoast’s site to show what he thought was part of the jamming equipment.

Please, please, please don’t tell me that the tech on our stock Taycans naturally jams Laser Speed Detection Instruments because I definitely would not be able to resist temptation. Combine that with an all black lights out mod and license plate auto cover and I would be insufferable (or at least more so than I am already).

A forum member speculated that maybe our taycans are too aero/curvy from the front to get a good read?

Ill bet you this is right and that the cop is used to the great bounceback he gets from F150 grilles. At least we now have a good excuse if we ever get pulled over in the Taycan for the same accusation...just refer to this thread!

Here’s my laser and radar set up (still pretty stealth)

Out of curiosity, have you ever tested your setup against any police guns? Just curious if you can JTG with this setup against different guns.

For places like Texas or California (which made jammers illegal) for true stealth I would suggest Stinger VIP fiber setup. The heads are so tiny, when properly installed, even the laser jammer enthusiasts (the guys who blog about it, etc) couldn't find them when inspecting my Tesla install during a testing meet (hint, you can hide them in the panel gaps around the hood or headlights for example). Here is the head size comparison (a little skewed as you'd need 2 of those fibers, one rx and one tx, to replace an ALP rx head, but you still get the idea). Of course even with a stealth setup, you should never JTG (Jam To Gun), but instead slow down when it goes off and kill the jammers, allowing the cop to get a solid readout of you doing the speed limit.

While Stinger is not as good as ALP, it works. Unfortunately besides being almost 2x the price, they have been effectively out of stock since COVID hit, so I will be doing an ALP setup for my Taycan when it arrives (Dec/Jan time frame). Jammers are not illegal where I drive, but I still intend to stelthize them a bit so at least the bare ALP heads are not showing.

ACC radar dome might be the culprit but you would expect all manufacturers to be mindful of the frequencies permitted for use per country / region!

Perhaps his 'gun' was wonky.

It isn't easy to jam a laser gun, so extremely unlikely it was jammed accidentally, even less so my radar antenna of any type (frequencies not even close). The cop either had poor aim, or his gun was not working well, or he simply did not know know hot to use it. Or, perhaps he was looking for a way to pull over a Taycan to admire it. ;)

This is interesting.

Does your car equipped with adaptive radar cruise control ? . Radar sensors are in the front grill.

Most police speed guns use radar . It will be interesting if Taycan's radar band interferes with police radar bands . Other possibly I'm thinking was, his gun was malfunctioning or needs tuning/calibration.

If I had known the ACC option had a bonus feature I would have ticked that box, oh well…;-)
