Hi- interested in views from anyone on octopus go. I’m currently on 15p day rate and 5p for 4 hours overnight. Contract was due up on Dec 21 but for some unbeknown to me reason rolled automatically for another year so now due to expire in 31 days in 21st Dec 22. Happy days had a year of super cheap ( by todays standards) motoring.

Anyone else had this? What are the chances of it rolling again?

Second point I’ve been pondering is it says energy firms have to give you notice of new tariffs. I’m 31 days out and no contact?. Is this a good sign? I read somewhere it should be 45 days?

Third point is I’ve googled the rates as per below so now 12p over night/ 44p day. This is a generic google as nothing on my account to check. Do I get these rates or do you get a more favourable offer if current customer?

Last q. With the rates cap now circa 35p until March. Do they cap the higher rate to 35p and you get 12p overnight or do they blend the 2 so in essence you pay a higher day rate due to the 4 hours at 12p?

I think it is only the standard variable tariff that is capped. I don’t think the deal you post above gets capped

And I believe they plonk you onto the then-current rates when your deal expires.

Depending on how much electric you use between 12.30-4.30am, I'd guess you'd be better going on their standard tariff. Which should (I think) be 34p kWh 24 hours per day. i.e. 4 hours of car charging cost up a bit, but everything else 'cheaper'.

Depends how much you charge your car. 4 hours @ 7kW =28kWh. that is probably double your usage for the rest of the day. The equation will be different for everyone but I would probably keep to the standard capped tariff as I use less charging than that

I just checked my bill, I wish it was!! I think our neighbours must be stealing our electricity (and gas)!
I guess it also depends on how much you use your car too!

Ah, ok so when it ends I would default back onto a standard tariff capped at 35p currently for all hours. Would they offer me the new octopus go rates posted above ? Presume that would then be in a 1 year contract and not capped?

From the outside, looking in, When I've checked octopus's website it says something along the lines of don't switch away from your current provider as you'll be worse off. i.e. they all only have to offer the capped rate to existing customers (as i understand it), because they're cutting money on it. So switching to a non standard tariff will probably be worse for you in the majority of circumstances.

As Ian says above, if your car charging is by far the largest part of your electric bill then a fixed overnight rate may be to your benefit.

This isn’t my experience. What I saw was, at the end of my contract, being offered to roll over onto the dual price tariff but just as the current dual rates.

ah, ok, this was what I thought initially would happen. Can you recall how long in advance they contacted you with new rates? We’re the rates any better as a current go customer than the ones you can just google ( as per above example, 12p 44p)

About 6-8 weeks in advance maybe and no special rates. The market dynamic is such that there is no competing to keep customers I guess.

? I thought we were using a lot at about 12-14kWh/day plus car charging. I sometimes wonder where it all goes. Too much phantom load from things plugged in, we cook our own food in electric oven/use electric hob and an inefficient large fridge freezer I think.

I think we must have a phantom and 2 or 3 vampires at our house. Usage never seems to go down, whatever we turn off!!

I am not sure how it all works, but I was on Octopus as a new customer in summer 2021.
It took a while to get the new meter fitted and move onto Octopus Go... Maybe about Aug 2021.

The rate was iro 5p/15p (cheap/full).

My usage is about 50% car / 50% other. Car usually manages to get charged on cheap rate.

It renewed this time, and this is what I pay now.
No idea how it works out with the price cap etc??
