I am embarrassed to ask but does anyone know the protocol for this, if any? I know some vehicles have tires that are specifically right and left. I haven't been told to rotate these tires but am now at 10K miles.

While it depends on the tires, the easiest way to think of it is that you don't do it. In theory, some tires/wheel combinations could be rotated left to right, but you definitely cannot rotate front to back in any way. I believe that many tires would need to be dismounted from the wheel even to be rotated left to right.

Tire rotations are generally front -> back and vice versa, which you can't do on a staggered set. So there is no tire rotation to do.

I had never heard about tyre rotation before us buying a Tesla. Is this mainly an US thing?? And I have been driving for may years in a number of countries in Europe. I guess we have had staggered tyres on all the cars so not applicable then. But maybe I have missed something??

A bit old fashioned but sometimes worth it....
Obviously not front to back.
My tyres (Pirelli 21s) and other Taycan NFO tyres I have had have 'OUTSIDE' on them but they are NOT rotation specific so you can swap side to side on same axle without having to swap the tyres on the rims.
Probably only worth it if you are specifically causing uneven wear on one side with track days?

Yep on the Taycan both my Pirelli winters and summers are *not* rotation specific so can swap on the same “axle” without fear.

On my Tesla they *are* rotation specific, so no swapping

It’s very much tyre specific.

Have always rotated tyres, where possible. Always a good way of getting even wear and making the rubber last longer than it would on the same place. As said it’s often specific to the tyre and geometry what can and can’t be done.

Do the Tyre Pressure sensors know they have been moved?

Good question.

On Teslas I swap wheels over and they just pick up the new sensors on each corner. Same rim size whether winter or summer so very easy. This is wheel/tyre swap replacement rather than rotation. Which isn’t possible.

On older cars no TPMS, no problem. ?

On Taycan I just changed the wheel size on screen and TPMS re-learn was fine. Again not for tyre rotation but for outright wheel/tyre swaps. I’ve not had the Taycan long enough to warrant moving tyres from one side to the other side.

Is it necessary - perhaps on a RWD but any AWD model not sure that it would be?

I've never done it and my T4S tyres wore evenly front and back.

If I had lots of time and tooling to do it I might be tempted but I'd struggle to justify the need.

It’s the front end which I’m thinking about, which by all accounts is an utter faff to properly get aligned as it’s a full subframe alignment job and camber is ‘averaged’ rather than set on each corner. We’ll see how these soft Pirelli’s go.

I’ve read the inside of the tires wear more, especially if you ride in low mode. Wouldn’t it be best to switch the front and back tires (left to right) to get more use out of the tires?

For my J1.1 they do (or somehow I keep swapping them to the same sides - I have 3 sets of tires I use throughout the year, one of them are directional so they don’t count).
