What makes the difference between Range Mode limiting to 60mph or 90mph?

Hey. Took a road trip in the last few days. On the way there, the car was happy to limit to 90 when I selected Range Mode - even on A roads not motorways, and even when I selected it while driving below 60 mph. On the way back on the motorway - even when cruising along at 70mph - the car would set the limit to 60 mph whenever I turned the dial, and drop the speed. Both instances +90% charge.

There has to be some tigger/cut off point that makes this decision. I just can't for the life of me figure out what it is!

I have my range mode set to 80mph and it always reads 80 when turning drive mode knob and engaging it. If I want to go faster, it's always overridden by holding the accel pedal for a few seconds.

I've had my RWD for 16months/12K miles and I almost always used range mode which got me over 300 miles of range. However, I stopped using it for the past couple weeks for 3 reasons as follows 1) It actually only seems to change the estimated range by 10-15 miles which is negligible for me 2) It's an extra step to change to range mode 3) I've realized that I bought a Porsche and when I want to hit the accelerator I do not want a lag. My 2 pennies.

did you use the Nav system with your final destination ?
in Range mode, car would limit the speed to reach the destination without charging (or optimising charging time).

Use nav system maybe 70% of the time

I didn’t know you could set it! Where on the PCM did you do that? Doesn’t explain the variation of course but would prevent it in future.

Fair. I’m going on my first extended range trip next week, so I’ll assess how useful it is then - but if it’s negligible may stop bothering.

No, Apple Maps both ways.

Using the nav system drops range by 15-25 miles.
Educate me on this one. I would think that using the nav system would optimize battery usage by telling the pcm where you're going and activating the intelligent range manager. Am I wrong here? As an aside, I charge almost exclusively at home (solar panels).

Purely anecdotal.
I went on a long mountain drive on Sunday and was really cutting close to make it home without charging. The nav directed me to a charging station 5 miles from my home to charge for 10min. I didn't like that option thought I could make it, so I shut down the nav and my range boosted 22 miles giving me the range I needed. Just to test it, I turned the nav back on and my range dropped 17 miles.
It was an interesting case study, plus I dropped 6,000' of elevation in 50 miles and charged the battery for half of the drive. ?
Someone smarter than me may be able to tell you how much processing power the nav uses.

Speed setting can be overridden depending on battery state of charge when in any drive mode.

If NAV is active along with PIRM then depending on those parameters the speed can be overridden.

Another explanation could be due to the windscreen camera picking up a speed restriction and not detecting the end of that restriction - ACC can behave like this as does the setting to observe speed limits

And 4) on some highways it is less comfortable and 5) eco AC mode in summer is not always ideal.

I have also stopped using range mode on langer trips.

the couple of extra miles are charged within minutes.

if necessary to arrive home I have used it.

In my expenrience what makes a bigger difference is reducing speed or increasing cabin temperature in the summer.
