Hi,

Hopefully somebody can give me some useful no biased advice.

I have had 2 Tesla over the past 5 years (model 3 performance and now a model Y performance) and considering switching brands at the end of my lease to either a Taycan S or BMWi50 or IX.

The only car model I have ever had twice is my X5 (I had 3) but due to company car tax it just isn't worth it

so, what is the real world range range bearing in mind the UK weather for somebody with heavy right foot?

What should I know before buying a Taycan?
What options must I have?
What advice could you give me?

What has previously put me off non Tesla's is the charging network, how do you find this? Obviously my Tesla its easy as it plans my route and routes me to the the most efficient 150/250kw supercharger, does the Porsche system work in a similar way?

I did test drive a Taycan a couple of year ago, but found the switchgear and infotainment system very complicated, maybe it was just as it was the first time.

Any constructive help highly appreciated

the only thing similar between the two cars is they both happen to be an EV - after that they diverge pretty quickly…I note you're in the UK - charging experience is vastly different than North America - consult local EV resources…

this topic has been beat to death on the forums - recommend using the search function - it doubtful there is anything to learn that has not already been discussed

both compoanies make products loved by their customers - but both companies focus on different aspects of vehicle design/ownership…Tesla is more "tech forward" and Porsche is more "driver" forward - Taycan is a better car - Tesla is a better EV…

both brands have owners that would never consider purchasing the other brand…for a variety of real/imagined reasons.

the Taycan is is NOT a Tesla - that good in some ways and less good in others - that about the most i can say that hasn't alredy been said with out rehasing 3 years worth of forum postings.

please consider reading and contributing to one of the existing Tesla vs. threads rather than making all of us slog through another one of these threads from scratch.

this might be a good sub-forum to spend some quality time with before your 2nd post and then get back to us…

I switched to a 4SCT after 3 x X5s and love it. Kids all grown up so I no longer needed a posh van for the Uni runs. That said the CT holds 3 x full size suitcases plus 2 x cabin sized suitcases. I use it as my daily and have covered over 10k miles since mid December. Real life range is +/- 210 miles in winter and currently +/- 250 miles. When we had that really cold spell in December -7Deg range dropped to around 180 miles. I can generally charge at home on the OVO Charge Anytime tariff at 10p/kwh. I usually do one trip per week to the MIdlands which is 212m round trip and no need tom charge this time of year. On longer runs you need to do a bit of planning but only the first time you make that trip. Needs a bit of extra thought at busy times of the year. For example at New Year we went to North Norfolk from home which is west of London. The obvious place to charge was Ionity at Cambridge services, but I guessed these might be very busy so dropped into the Tesla chargers at Trumpington.....

Thanks Simon and the range it quite impressive from what you've stated. I generally have to have my MY in % and not range as the drop off is so much in mileage mode.
I found the bmw idrive quite easy to use, how does the Porsche one stack up?

As @daveo4EV mentioned above… LOTS of threads on here about virtually every aspect of both the Taycan and the Taycan vs Tesla and some other EV’s. Also, never owned a Tesla but I’m willing to bet switching modes between % vs mileage has more to do with Tesla’s software which apparently is a little gratuitous in predicting range calculations. Could be wrong… it’s happened before, but only once ?

no one buys a Porsche for their software "chops" - and while PCM is generally acceptable I've yet to hear anyone say they prefer to BMW or other vendors - generally speaking PCM is functional and acceptable lacks a "fan base" as a software system

we all love our Porsche's but generally speaking it for aspects of the vehicle other than the PCM software…

The updated Porsche software is reasonably responsive compared to the original version, but nowhere near as good as BMW's that said after nearly 8 months in the Taycan I no longer think about it. My wife drives a BMW and she prefers the Porsche touch screen to her i-drive. In built Apps like Spotify are rubbish compared to BMW but that is probably more to do with connectivity than the App. Car Paly and Android Auto work very well in the Taycan. You'll occasionally lose the LTE connection which can be frustrating but so far that is the only issue I have experienced with mine

I have never owned a Tesla, had a few Test drives, overall the Taycan just makes you smile every time you drive it.

I’ve only had my Taycan for 3 weeks. LOVE this car! I’m personally not bothered by the PCM (yet lol) or tech because I genuinely bought the car for it’s beautiful shape and driving dynamics. Being an EV is a bonus to me.

I have owned a Taycan 4s for two weeks and owned 15 BMWs before this. The Taycan feels like cars that BMW built until 2013 when they started building German Lexuses. The Taycan handles very well and the quality of the build is outstanding.
If you can charge at home or if you have a reliable EA charging station near your home or office, then the shorter range should not be a problem

Switched from Model X to TT. Best advice is prob drive one.
I like the Taycan MUCH more. But you decide.

I am in England like you.
I must say I haven’t needed to charge away from home often and it was on a route to my daughter’s house which I have done often.
No sat nav recommends what I have found to be the best route, whether the Porsche one or ABRP or Zap-map so what I did was looked for fast chargers on the route, navigated to them and charged whilst having a drink.
It was a bit more work than letting the car do it but since IME automatic planners don’t necessarily choose a good route anyway it was fine and relaxing.

I haven’t used a Tesla so don’t know how close to a good route their planner takes you.

I am an old bloke and I find it amusing to watch sat nav re-calculating the route when I am going on my non-recommended usual route and the time to destination get better and better and be quicker than the original sat nav calculated route. So I don’t mind planning my own route as I have been doing for years :)

If your priority is charging network, range, infotainment, and things that have nothing to do with driving performance then you would probably not appreciate the Taycan. I'd love the car without any infotainment whatsoever, so when it glitches and all goes to black, I barely notice. Conversely, my wife has a Tesla and I can't get used to it. It feels like an appliance. As suggested by another member, this topic has been beaten to death. My perspective is not unique.
