So another nail in the left rear 21 good year F1 asymmetrics NFO, which have been very difficult to source for the past year, the patching process resulted in unusual finding as shown below:. This happened when taking the tire off the rim and a tear opened up. When the tire is back in its normal shape the rip/aged part is hard to identify.

My question is:
1. is this safe to drive for a bit more miles given how much tread this tire has left? Also, it's hard to source Good year NF0's where I am at.
2. What could have caused this?

This tire has gotten 3 nails patched already as well. I was able to source a backup Good year F1 NF0 21's but only have one and am reluctant to use it right away if there is nothing wrong with the current tire, albeit some signs of aging.

I wouldn’t think it is safe. The main thing is to have no damage to the underlying structure which is impossible to see here but fairly likely I would think.

Shoulder damage like this would probably be caused by running at a low pressure. Did you stop immediately you got the puncture or continue on with a low or very low pressure?

I always keep tyre pressure in my left display and correct asap if more than 0.1 bar out.
The tyre is more robust at higher pressures.

Running at +0.1 bar last 10k km. Ran -0.1 first 10k km. Pressure was steady at +0.1 after nail was found. No low pressure warning. Found nail on routine tire check. (I check weekly now given this is my 8th nail in two years of ownership.

There was a patch job on the close to the shoulder though, close enough where a replacement was recommended. I decided to see against the change. Could this have contributed to the crack?

I don’t know but I take zero risk with tyres, the most important part of any tyre.

So you are sure you never drove it with a nail in the tyre?

Oh I’ve driven it with a nail in the tire but just not at low pressure.

previous low pressure warning I stopped immediately for a professional fix.

I’m going to change the tire but without knowing how this happened hard to mitigate chances of next occurrence.

No way I'd even consider driving on those.

And 12K is decent wear for the Taycan, it seems.

You are right and that is why I’m so gutted having to change these out. These rims are good for another 20k kms.

then again it has been professionally plugged due to nails 3 times already..

Looking at your picture, have you by any chance hit some pavement badly and squeezed your tyre badly? That could probably be a cause.

And if you look carefully, you also seem to have some nasty damage on your rim at exactly the same place. Hitting a pavement in a tight corner and half mounting the pavement.

I would not drive that tyre a single meter any longer!! I also do not think that any tyre repair shop would recommend to fit that again.

update on the status. New tire fitted today at Porsche along with a pcm update. Porsche tech says the tire crack was likely caused by the machinery and technician before the tire plug. The tire rim removal machine used at chain tire/auto repair shops are notoriously generic and designed for much smaller, less wide wheels. To exacerbate the issue the technician at the chain shop was crude with the removal and likely squeezed the tire enough to cause the damage seen in the first post.
Hitting something could have been a cause but the tear was too uniform with no jagged edges and signs of residues from the culprit.

on another note, this wheel was hit by the tire of a cayenne in a tight parking lot at 1-2 km per hour, not sure if that was enough to start a micro crack that eventually lead to failure from external forces as mentioned before.

this is what the tire crack looks like now it is off the rim:

What is the date of production on these tires (should be stamped on them)?
