Charging away from home for me is a rarity and with solar and batteries arriving soon cost for a charge will decrease substantially. I think it’s time for people with the space to install solar to move away from the profit gouging corporates, financially it’s a no brainier.

I charged for -32cts kWh yesterday, today it’s -5cts :p Earning money charging:cool:
I avoid public charging as much as possible. Current pricing is rip-off.

Once you have this you should look at moving to an Octopus tariff with cheaper rate overnight. Will probably save you loads, especially if you can charge your solar batteries from the grid in winter when there is no sunlight

In Poole tonight and stopped for a quick charge at Shell Darbys Corner.

it’s one of the new Shell Recharge sites where they’re now installing Alpitronic HYC-300 charge points, much like Fastned.

I was actually pleasantly surprised, it accepted my key fob and was clearly authenticated with PCS. Great and at 58p odd per unit, not cheap but a darn site better than 85p Shell rack rate.

Great of the Shell stations now have become part of the PCS. That has not been the case before and then it became extremely expensive. I think I paid £1.12 through Chargemap at some stage.

But I am a bit surprised at your rate. were you also charged a time element for this or the new rates in PCS since this spring?

When I look at planning trips to UK I can only see a rate of £0.74 per kWh at DC outside of Porsche dealers and Ionity? see below.

I am actually considering cancelling my subscripti to PCS since it only is useful if you do a lot of miles per year. The basic fee for me now is 24.99 Euro per month, but not only for the months that I use the service but all months! Otherwise they need to sen out a new card everytime you resubscribe.

I have just completed a long trip and made a comparison table travelling through different European countries. Will post that at some stage here.

The savings of driving electric (taycan T), compared to petrol costs (BMW M5 comp) are much smaller than I thought.

I think the example quoted may be an aberration. Shell has been listed on the PCS database for a long time, but has not worked. When I discussed this with Porsche, they said that most of the Shell garages are now part of different networks, which have exited the PCS scheme, and they were unable to tell which was on which network. This seemed rather a shoddy excuse for listing chargere not supported by porsche. Perhaps the one listed above is one of the few on a network still supported

This is probably because you were looking at PCS-plus. The plus refers to an increase in Porsche profitability, not a increase in benefits for the customer.
On non-plus PCS, most of the UK chargere are at around 50-60p/kWh (ie 31p/kWh+33p/min) with Ionity at 30p/kWh with no time charge. Most of us are resisting that with every way we can. I think Porsche intends to force all of us to PCS-plus eventually.

In the Netherlands you can charge your Taycan at every Tesla Supercharger. Less than one kilometer from where I live I can charge for € 0,27 or € 0.29 / kWh. That’s even less than the € 0,33 of my 3 year offer from Porsche. With a membership of € 9,99 a month I can charge at € 0,22 or € 0,24 / kWh. And they always work.

In Europa there a several Superchargers for non-Tesla’s. I think my new Macan comes with the 3 year Ionity offer, but Tesla does it much better…

Thanks for clarifying. Yes I knew some of the Shell chargers were listed before and not working. I also seen that a few that I planned to use, come up with the MyPorsche app map. They clearly state that the charging can be initiate with the card but not the app. If that also is incorrect then shame on them.

Yes I have been forced to go to the Plus charging at some stage here in spring.

If you use fast charging for a road trip I expect it will cost at least as much as petrol. Unless you can find IONITY stations. My EV mileage is cheap, but only because I charge over night at home. Charging away from home is very expensive so it is fortunate that it is a rare event for me

I find that using Ionity, it is quite cheap throughout Europe. And as somebody else pointed out, the Tesla SuC can be very cheap as well.

I have used mainly Ionity through Europe and paid 0.39 Euro ( 0.34 £ or 0.42 USD)

I have at home seen Tesla SuC have had a price of 0.15 Euro per kWh at lowest, and that was cheaper than charging at home. BUT that was to charge after 22.00 hours to 04.00 hours. But still good. (subscription needed.)

So long story short, Shell are no longer installing Tritium units - as Tritium went bust last month?

However Shell have over the last few months apparently been installing nice white Alpitronic HYC-300 units.

if anyone is unfamiliar- these are awesome chargers. Same as what Fastned installs, MFG, and even IONITY are now installing them at new sites like Bodmin in 400 kW dual-head format.

Anyhow in the Uhese are the sites running them so far:
  • Shell Darbys Corner, Poole: 6 bay / 3 x dual head HYC-300’s
  • Shell Titchfield, Fareham: 6 bay / 3 x triple head HYC-300’s (with CHADeMO)
  • Shell Pinner, London: 4 bay / 2 x triple head HYC-300’s (with CHADeMO)
  • Shell Hemel Hempstead: 4 bay / 2 x dual head HYC-300’s
  • Shell Fenstanton, Huntington: 6 bay / 3 x dual head HYC-300’s

That was the blended average rate I was charged (including any time element for 17 minutes of charge time). Straight from the charging section off the Porsche app.

I’m still on the I suppose now “legacy” original PCS rates.

This is the first time Shell has ever worked for me using PCS ??

I have used Shell Fenstanton a bit when I was at Silverstone and stayed in Cambridge with family. And last year that did not work with PCS. The TCS helpline were totally useless and said it should work, but two cards refused to do so.PCS even had trouble find the station. Same with Buckden.
And then Chargemap charged me 1.12 GBP!

95% of my Taycan use is on long journeys of around 1,500km round-trip, from Holland to the North of England. I try to use IONITY when able, and most of the time that's possible. I keep a record of all my charging costs combined with trip length etc. Looking at all my data, and without posting it in detail, most trips result in a cost of between 8.5 and 9.5 Euro Cents per km.

Compare this with various high performance ICE cars I've owned, and doing the same journeys:

BMW M2 Coupe (F87) Between 13.0 and 14.0 Euro Cents per km

BMW M4 Coupe (F82) Between 15.0 and 16.0 Euro Cents per km

BMW M3 Saloon (G80) Between 19.0 and 21.0 Euro Cents per km

So, significantly more expensive for the ICE cars. The big discrepency between the M2 and M3 is down to the big difference in petrol costs at the time.
