95% of my Taycan use is on long journeys of around 1,500km round-trip, from Holland to the North of England. I try to use IONITY when able, and most of the time that's possible. I keep a record of all my charging costs combined with trip length etc. Looking at all my data, and without posting it in detail, most trips result in a cost of between 8.5 and 9.5 Euro Cents per km.

Compare this with various high performance ICE cars I've owned, and doing the same journeys:

BMW M2 Coupe (F87) Between 13.0 and 14.0 Euro Cents per km

BMW M4 Coupe (F82) Between 15.0 and 16.0 Euro Cents per km

BMW M3 Saloon (G80) Between 19.0 and 21.0 Euro Cents per km

So, significantly more expensive for the ICE cars. The big discrepency between the M2 and M3 is down to the big difference in petrol costs at the time.
Thanks for sharing. My point was that most fast charging in the UK is at around 85p/kWh unless you can use Ionity at 30p. At 85p/kWh your cost per mile will be something like 30p, depending how you drive. Maybe better in Europe and obviously better with Ionity. But the reality is that on a UK road trip using fast charging, the costs are high

Who's paying 85p/kWh? I admit, I'm relatively new to EVs, and I've only owned two BEVs, both Taycans, but when I see Instavolts and Shell Recharge for this price, I do wonder who's paying these prices? Gridserve also. My decision to buy a Taycan was after I looked at what it would cost to "fuel" it, and if I'd have to rely on paying 85p/kWh, I simply wouldn't have bought one.

I look at Tesla charging, and the location nearest where I am right now in Leeds is showing a price of between 30p and 62p for a non-member (off peak and peak). Being a member brings the price down to 22p to 46p.

The “value” proposition in ultra-fast charging IS Tesla.

These are the now opened v4 sites which will easily accommodate a Taycan parked in the ‘correct’ bay (so as to minimise opprobrium from Tesla drivers when it’s a busy site):
  • Tottenham: 12 Bays (opened 25/08/23)
  • Reading, M4 West (Moto): 12 bays (opened 18/09/23)
  • Trentham: 10 bay expansion (additional to existing 8 x V3, also open to all) (opened 26/09/23)
  • Heartlands (Whitburn), off Jnc 4A on M8: 4 bays(opened 22/11/23)
  • Newmarket, Studlands Retail Park: 8 bays (opened 2/12/23)
  • Luton, Gipsy Lane Retail Park: 16 bays (opened 11/12/23)
  • Lifton, Arundel Arms Hotel: 16 bays (opened 14/12/23)
  • Bromley, Stockwell Close: 12 bays (opened 9/01/24)
  • Kettering: 8 bays (opened 9/02/24)
  • Ipswich: 12 bays (opened 12/02/24)
  • Frankley, M5 South (Moto): 16 bays (opened 14/03/24)
  • Bristol Eastgate: 8 bays (opened 20/03/24)
  • Solihull: 6 bays (opened 26/03/24)
  • Annesley, J27 M1: 10 bays (opened 27/03/24)
  • Larkhall, Radstone Hotel, J8 M74: 16 bays (opened 29/03/24)
  • Gloucester Services, M5 North: 8 bays (opened 09/05/24)
  • Gloucester Services, M5 South: 8 bays (opened 09/05/24)
  • Penhale (Fraddon): 8 bays (opened 10/05/24)
There’s also a ton of opened v2 and v3 sites, in fact 24 additional v2/v3 sites opened suddenly last week….

We are very fortunate here in Europe to have a good coverage by Ionity. And even better coverage when we add in all of the other networks, EnBW, Fastned, Allego, etc. etc. Plus all the Tesla station open for all (if you have the 150 kW option) There is an excellent coverage along the main roads form south of Spain to Nordkap in Norway. So it is highly unlikely to be stranded on a long road trip. There may be some queues at peak holiday times, but that is ok. And most of the larger networks are well maintained and dispensers in working order.

My comparison between a very similar Taycan road trip to a high performance BMW M5 competition, shows very similar results as yours above. Slightly higher costs for petrol

My comparison shown below for a return trip from Nice, France to Cambridge area UK to Stockholm Sweden and return. All in all the distance driven on the trip is 9 350 km. And only Ionity chargers were chosen.

Electric Taycan is half the price of petrol, if you use the Porsche Charging plus OR Ionity pass.

It would be cheaper on this type of trip to only use a credit card at Ionity compared to Porsche Charging (the simpler, cheaper option)

But the difference between the Porsche Charging Service (not PLUS) and petrol cost is not that large.

The overall trip was about 15- 20% faster in the M5 due to the very few petrol stops and longer driving times. Average speed while driving was similar, no difference really. There is a larger overhead to find the chargers and get a charge started compared to a petrol stop.

The other observation is that one really needs to do a lot of mileage, if you choose the PCS Plus to get the benefit

A surprise was however the huge difference in Petrol prices
The lowest was 1.69 Euro per litre in Sweden
The highest was 2.65 Euro per litre on the Autobahn in Germany
Average cost was 2.20 Euro per litre
Nearly ever fuel stop was Shell V-Power.

Direct running costs are small compared to the price of the cars!

I was paying more than 85 p/kWh due to running out of electrons! But only as emergency! You can also see nearly all of Shell and BP chargers completely empty all the time. Availability sky high, but also the costs.

Thanks for posting the data.

I forgot to mention, I'm collecting a BMW i5 eDrive40 within the next two weeks (replacing my BMW 330e Touring), so I'll expect an even lower cost/km, as I'll use my PCS card to charge it on long journeys, and the i5 is much more efficient than my Taycan.

Will be interested in hearing your experience with real world consumption comparison.

Congratulations on the i5. That is a nice looking Beemer. It is an even larger and heavier car than the Taycan but with a smaller battery.

Yeah, I'll definitely post my thoughts, and some photos from the collection day.

Well, its nose is not *quite* as ugly as the i4 or iX (which seem to have the sort of sticker that Lego provide for their engines) but I'd still be parking it with its front in some shrubs so I don't have to see it :) What are BMW thinking of these days?? (actually the answer may be "China"). Tastes definitely vary.
